Is The Bible A ‘Powerless’ History Book?

This is a series of write-ups concerning MYTHS ABOUT THE BIBLE.

“The Gospel is like a caged lion. It does not need to be defended, it just needs to be let out of its cage.”

— Charles H. Spurgeon

In November 2021, a ‘preacher’ turned politician called Osofo Kyiriabosom made the news when he said that the Bible is a ‘powerless’ history book’ (Ghanaweb.com: The bible is a ‘powerless’ history book – Osofo Kyiriabosom). This was a strange profession by a man who claims to be the mouthpiece of God.

“Assault on the Bible is a fatal attempt to cast doubt on the Christian faith.”

My aim in this piece is to look at this utterance against the backdrop of the Scriptures. Assault on the Bible is a fatal attempt to cast doubt on the Christian faith. In the book of Genesis 3, Satan’s strategy was to mingle lies with truth to deceive Adam and Eve to cause the fall. We see and hear these assertions almost everyday when we turn on the TV or radio or browse the internet.

How do we deal with this?

When someone says the Bible is just another historical book, what does he mean? Well, they mean to drag the Holy God-inspired book onto the same level of history books written by mere men who are nowhere close to the living God. The Bible you have on your bookshelf and electronic gadget is not just another book. It is the ‘holy Scriptures of God’ (Romans 1:1-2).

Dear Christian, let’s let out the lion to defend itself. What does the Bible say concerning this matter?

Hebrews 4:11-13 says,

"11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."

Simply put: the word of God is powerful and it can achieve what no book on earth can achieve. Let me give you a few examples from the Bible. Where lies the powerless word if it created everything (Genesis 1 and John 1)? Talk of our salvation, and Paul will step to the front and declare that the gospel (the word of God) is the power of God for our salvation (Romans 1:16-17). The writer of Hebrews says God upholds ‘all things by the word of His power’ (Hebrews 1:3). Jesus said in John 17:17 that, God should, “Sanctify them (disciples) by Your truth. Your word is truth.”

Dear Christian, anyone who assaults the inspiration of the Bible (God authored book) aims at casting doubts on your faith. Resist it.

Grace & peace to you!
