How to Bring Forth Fruit in Your Christian Life [Bible Teaching]

There is no need to force results when you have done what it will take to have it.

The book of Psalm is a hymn book for the Jewish people. There are different kinds of Psalms that speak to the heart of different issues in this wonderful book authored by David amongst host of other spirit-filled leaders of the Jewish nation. Psalm 1 opens the whole book with a sort of summary of the way of righteous and the way of the unrighteous and their end there of. Verse 1-3 speaks of the way of the righteous whereas the verse 4-6 speaks of the way of the unrighteous. For this post, we will concern ourselves with the way of the righteous. Where there is life for the righteous, there is destruction for the unrighteous (1:6; John 3:16).

A critical look at Psalm 1:1-3, teaches that there are three basic aspects: the donts of the righteous, the dos of the righteous and the results of the righteous. In a nutshell, the results of the righteous are founded upon what he does and what he does not do.

Psalm 1:1-3 says,

1 Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

The Donts of the Righteous

If the righteous man wants to bear fruit, he must avoid association with the people who do not please God nor seek Him. They are the ungodly, sinners and the scornful. These are three expressions of the unrighteous. They rebel against God and His law. Paul says bad association corrupt good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). If the righteous wants to bear spiritual and all other related fruit that gives glory to God, he must avoid association with people who are not honouring God.

The Dos of the Righteous

Again the Psalmist says not only does the righteous man avoid bad association but he goes the step further to delight in the word of God. Yes, it is good to avoid but never good if we do not do some good things in their place. In verse 2, the righteous delight in the word by meditating in it day and night. Paul encourages us in Colossians to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly (Colossians 3:16).

The Results of the Righteous

When the righteous avoid bad company and delights in the word, he will see results. At this point, we cannot jump the gun and wish that we have fruit when we have not done the first two things to necessitate this result. The Psalmist likens the righteous with a tree. That when he does the first two things, he will be able to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. It will bring forth its forth in its season. There is no need to force results when you have done what it will take to have it.

Whatever life you desire to have must be premised on what the Bible teaches that we must do. If you want to be knowledgeable in the word and obey it, you must walk with people who are on their way to that end so that they can help you. If you want to grow spiritually, have a desire backed with specific things you must do from the word of God in order to see fruit.

May we keep planting good seed that will yield good results.
