Will you gladly ask your child or sister to choose to be gay or lesbian? This is a very important question we must ponder over before we declare our stands on such a matter of life.
In a TownHall Talk on 17th June 2022 on Asaase Radio, the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of Ghana, Mr. Freddie Blay said that people must be allowed to choose whether to be gay or lesbian. He called it hypocrisy for those who are against the menace.
Here are my thoughts on his comments:
#1. Should We Allow People To Be Gays And Lesbians?
In the first part of his comments, Mr. Blay said that people must be allowed to choose to be gays or lesbians. He further asserted that it is their own problem and that he will not concern himself with what a man and man or a woman and woman decide to do. It is their own problem.
Mr. Blay said in this regard,
“If people want to be gays, it should be their own problem. I won’t go ahead to be a persecutor of those who want to be together as man and man or woman and woman.”
My question is: should we, as a society, allow people to decide to be gays and lesbians? Do we leave people to their own course in life? If so, where lies our values that such things are affront on what we hold dear? If we say it is their own problem, then we are becoming apathetic to the serious moral issues of the nation. The Bible says in James 4:17 that, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” We cannot stay neutral when people are heading for a doom in life.
#2. Should We Decide Based On Excesses?
In his comments, Mr. Blay further noted that many of the people who speak against gays and lesbians are being hypocritical and are emotionally driven instead of soberly thinking through the matter. In effect, he was questioning why we should sweat over people’s life decisions.
Mr. Blay said;
“I think there’s too much hypocrisy about it. Emotions have been excited over it, to the extent that we are not sober over it. I honestly do not see the hullabaloo about it. We should allow them if they want to.”
Sir, this matter is serious and deserves all our emotional, intellectual and religious engagement. Yes, I agree that some people may have taken it overboard but it does not in anyway invalidate the argument that the actions of the gays and lesbians are afront to our societal values and norms. Clearly, the exceses of the people against gays and lesbians cannot be used as justification that they are right. Just as Sodom and Gomorrah became disdained by God and incurred His wrath, that is the same way we will turn out to be if we become liberal in our approach for people to do what they want to do. (Genesis 19:1-29)
#3. Should We Not Be Clear About Our Moral Values?
The third and final issue raised by the NPP Chairman is that he does not subscribe to LGBTQ+ but he does not care about what same sex people do in their bedroom. In a sens, he means he will rather remain silent than speak against it.
Mr. Blay noted in the interview with Nhyira Addo that,
“I don’t subscribe to gayism as a choice because I’m not attracted by that, but I don’t want to go into people’s bedrooms. I don’t want to see what they are doing.”
Sir, I think if you are against it, you should as well help to rescue them from their unrighteous conduct. In my article on 4 Deadly Lies the LGBTQ+ Community Tells Itself To Justify Their Unrighteous Lifestyle, I refuted the argument that their behaviour does not affect the rest of us. Indeed it does. What we do privately affects our public lives. Just as we hold high leaders of integrity and honesty, we also uphold the sacred union of marriage between a man and a woman and not a man and a man or a woman and a woman. Such overturning of our godly values will spell doom for the future of our unborn children.
I can say for certain that if our leaders accept their advocacies and pressures, we will turn our back on God as a nation and eat the fruit of our doings. Majority of our people have resisted this ungodly lifestyle because of what we hold dear and the honour we ascribe to God. That’s not to say everyone who is against it is holier than other people. We are only saying we hate what God hates.
May God have mercy on our land. May our leaders do what pleases God.
