How I Learnt to Quote Bible Verses

I started off as a Christian in 2010 without knowing how to quote more than three Bible verses. I knew only John 3:16; 10:30; and 11:35. Beyond these, I was empty. In fact, I could quote them but never knew their meaning.

Anyways, unbelievers and false converts have no deep knowledge of the Scriptures because they do not have the Holy Spirit indwelling them. Much as some religious people can quote texts (even Satan can do that), it means nothing to them.

I remember so well that in 2010 at Christ Temple of ICGC in Ghana, when I joined the Adult Bible Class (ABC) I admired some of my classmates for their ability to quote plenty of verses from memory. I wondered how they did it and if I could ever catch up with them.

Today, by the grace of God, not only can I quote many verses but I can also teach the Bible. I have read the Bible to the point that I could quote it without even knowing. How did it really happen? How was I able to move from only three verses to the ability to teach and preach God’s Word?

Let me share a few tips to help you. I believe you need this to encourage you that if you cannot quote a verse today, you can do more tomorrow.

#1. Read the Bible Everyday

The first way on how to know your Bible is to sit down each day and read it. I have always been serious about Bible reading. When I heard someone testify thay he has read the Bible from cover to cover many times, it encouraged me to also try it. Joshua 1:8 teaches us not to let the word of God depart from our mouth.

#2. Study the Bible Everyday

It is not enough to just read the Bible like a newspaper. You must move on to the next step of studying the Bible. Paul told Timothy to study to show himself approved. Personal Bible studies help to bring out the meaning of the text and also understand doctrines of the Bible. The more I studied, the more some verses and passages stuck.

#3. Discuss the Bible

Lastly, I learnt to be involved in Bible discussions. If there was any meeting of the church I loved to attend, it was cell meetings. I liked to hear what other people have to say about passages of the Bible. This quest to share what I read and studied was instrumental in retaining what I read and studied. The Bible says Ezra set her heart to teach the Bible.

Dear believer, you can admire people for how they quote the Scriptures but you must remember that they have been eating the Scriptures for many years. Be ready to read, study and discuss the Bible if you want to know your Bible and remember verses.
