No Preacher’s Name is Powerful Than the Name of Jesus!

The African continent is gradually becoming known for bad theology and unsound Bible teachings. Each day in and day out, you hear a preaching that makes you want to fall off from your desk due to its unfounded biblical nature. It is in that light that I believe we must continually proclaim the truth of the gospel or many will be deceived by false teachings flying around everywhere.

Another video I spotted over the weekend was about a preacher somewhere in the Southern African Region teaching that the name of his ‘spiritual father’ (another preacher) works better than the name of Jesus. He further noted that others can prefer to use the Bible but he chooses to use the name of his ‘spiritual father’ (the same preacher) that works. I mean, talk of crass false teaching in Christology (doctrine of Christ), bibliology (doctrine of the Bible), anthropology (doctrine of man) and this will make the list.

There are three errors embedded in these statements of the preacher. I would like us to go on a short Bible study to uncover the truth the Bible teaches about who Christ is, man is and the Bible is. By the time we are done, you will realize that you must shut your ears to many ‘preachers’ and stick to your Bible and allow the Spirit to lead you to faithful Bible teachers and churches in these end times.

If you are a Bible student, you will not be surprised to hear such things because Jesus said in Matthew 24 that in the last days, many will come in His name to deceive even the elect.

To be fair, I am not sure the ‘spiritual father’ of the preacher teaches that he is more powerful than Jesus. I am yet to see any evidence in support of that. Be that as it may, these errors must be pointed out and corrected as the Scriptures urge us to do to protect the saints from being driven to and fro by every wind of doctrine.

#1. Can A Preacher’s Name Be More Powerful Than the Name of Jesus?

I must state from the outset that a preacher is not Jesus. He does not come close to Jesus nor His name. I will say more about a preacher in answer to the third question but for now let’s stick to the biblical teaching on Jesus Christ.

Let’s pay close attention to the following passages about Christ Jesus:

  • “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10 NKJV)
  • “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:14 NKJV)
  • “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9‭-‬11 NKJV)

It’s palpably clear from the Scriptures above that the name of the Lord brings safety to His children, gives us answers to prayer, and God has bestowed a superior name to Jesus which everyone will confess that He is Lord.

There is no preacher whose name can do any of the above. The ‘most powerful’ preacher derives His power from Jesus whom we serve as our Master and Lord.

Lastly, Isaiah says that God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts (55:8-9). The name of Jesus is more powerful than any known or unknown human, demonic, satanic, or principality name.

#2. Can A Preacher’s Name Be More Powerful Than The Bible?

The second prime question I want us to discuss is: can any preacher’s name be more powerful than the Bible? Never ever! The Bible is the word of the living God. It is unfailing. It delivers what it is intended to accomplish.

Let’s read the following Scriptures:

  • “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11 NKJV)
  • “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” (Psalms 19:7 NKJV)
  • “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV)

The Scriptures above allude to the fact that God’s word is able to achieve what God wants it to do. It is more potent than any other human name. Paul teaches in Romans 1:17 that it is the preaching of the word that brings salvation to people. If you preach the name of any preacher, it will produce no result like what the Bible does. We must pay heed to sound biblical teaching and not human names.

#3. Who Is A Preacher?

Some preachers want to appear more powerful than who Christ has made them to be. Others have learnt wrongly to do everything in the name of their ‘spiritual fathers’. They can preach their ‘father’s’ teaching without quoting the Bible. So strange and unbiblical.

Who really is a preacher from the pages of the Old and New Testaments?

  • “Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.” (Exodus 14:31 NKJV)
  • “Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.” (II Samuel 7:8 NKJV)
  • “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16 NKJV)
  • “Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.” (Romans 1:1 NKJV)
  • “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1:1 NKJV)
  • “I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Revelation 1:9 NKJV)

According to Paul, Peter, James, Jude and John, every preacher worth his salt is a bondservant of Christ. In fact, all believers are slaves of Christ. We are nowhere close to Jesus. He is the Master and we are His servants.

Final Word

It’s worth re-echoing that the name of Jesus and the Bible are our source of power. Without them, we are walking on slippery slopes. If we know our proper place and that of our ‘fathers’ in God’s kingdom, we shall firmly rely on the grace of God that makes His work possible. Paul declared that all that he did was by the grace of Christ and not a human being.
