From Weed Smoking, Womanizing & Mustabating to Gospel Musician

God can change anyone for His purpose. We cannot put a limit on some people and declare them as unredeemable.

In an interview on the Delay Show, Ghanaian gospel artiste Nana Yaw Boakye (a.k.a. MOG) opened up about his life; how he started and where he is now in his music career. Speaking of his lifestyle before becoming a Christian, MOG stated that he was an ardent weed smoker, womanizer and mustabater. Even when he became a Christian, the particular habit of mustabation still lingered in his life. It became strong and unbreakable. Indeed, he said he went for deliverance services, fasted, and prayed but nothing happened to help him break free.

Ultimately, two important things helped him to break free from all sinful behaviours:

#1. The Preaching of Christ

The first step that drew him to Christ was the preaching of the gospel to him by a friend in Senior High School. He gave his life to Christ after hearing the power of the gospel’s ability to change lives.

The sharing of the gospel brings change to people’s lives. This change is from the kingdom and dominion of darkness (ruled by Satan) to the kingdom of light (ruled by Christ).

We must constantly share the love of Christ demonstrated on the cross to people who are not believers. Romans 5:8 says God’s love was demonstrated in that while we were still sinners, He died for our sins. Our job as believers is to share what He has done on the cross with other people. Christ commanded us in Matthew 28:19-20 to go into all the world to make disciples including weed smokers, womanizers and mustabaters. The gospel has the power to change lives (Romans 1:16-17).

#2. The Power of Prayer

MOG further narrated that one day when there was no one at home, he had a strong urge to go to the bathroom and do his mustabation. This was when he was a Christian. When he poured the lotion in his palm, he sensed a strong remorse for the first time (other times, the remorse had come after the act). Then he prayed to God that the Holy Spirit should help him to overcome the immoral conduct. The Lord answered his prayers and till now, he has not been involved in it again.

The fact that you are born again doesn’t mean you will not be tempted to sin (and actually sin). Paul spoke against the sin of the Christians in Corinth including sexual immorality. (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)

We can learn from MOG’s Christian journey that God answers our prayers. He hears us when we pray and delivers us from sin. Jesus said in the Lord’s prayer that we should pray not to be led into temptation (Matthew 6:13). Everyone struggles with something he/she is trusting God to overcome. Our responsibility is to pray for grace to break free and never return to it.

I Corinthians 10:13 NKJV says that,

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

Trapped in the weed smoking, womanizing, and mustabating MOG was an international gospel musician. The devil majors in taking lives and stealing the beauty from it. (John 10:10) We must know his devices, submit to God, and resist him. (James 4:7)

May the power of Christ help you to overcome every sin in your life to live for His glory alone forever.
