The Man Who Is Physically Challenged But Multi-Talented

Over the weekend, I attended a funeral Thanksgiving Service at the Methodist Church in my hometown when I discovered a physically challenged man who is so multi-talented.

This man is suffering from a disability in both legs making it impossible for him to stand straight nor walk normally. But in spite of this condition, he uses his time, energy and abilities to serve God in the music department of the church.

“When life throws disadvantages at us, we must pick the pieces together and make use of our advantages to the glory of God”

As the choir he leads was celebrating their anniversary, he led the fundraising drive to raise money to support their activities.

As he carried on with the fundraising, below are five qualities I observed about him:

#1. He Is A Singer

The first thing I noticed about this man is his ability to sing. During the programme,  he would intermittently raise songs and sing very well. He didn’t hide his God-given singing ability but joined the choir to lead the people of God in songs and hymns.

#2. He Is A Music Director

I am very sure his attitude and hard work towards using his gift made room for him to become the choir director. Indeed, he even mentioned that he has worked at various levels in the church. The reward of hard work is more work.

#3. He Is A Communicator

The next ability I obviously spotted about him was that he is a public speaker. Public speaking is not easy but this man showed his prowells. It is something God gave him and he decided to use it to His glory by serving in the church.

#4. He Is A Fundraiser

This marvelled me. With less than 200 people in the small temple, this man led the fundraising efforts to realize close to Ghc5,000 to help their choir (after the church’s two major offerings had been taken). He used every non-irritating strategy under the sun to get people to give. Wonderful gift.

#5. He Is Humorous

Probably the last admirable thing about this man I want to highlight is his knack for humour. When he showed up, my sister turned to me and said, “he is very funny”. He made the whole fundraising fun-filled and not boring. People laughed and clapped even though they were giving. A gifted man can make a tedious venture humourous.

There are many able people who might give excuses for why they cannot use their God-given abilities to serve in their local assemblies but not this man. He teaches us that when life throws disadvantages at us, we must pick the pieces together and make use of our advantages to the glory of God. One day when we appear before God, we cannot utter one ounce of excuse about why we buried our gifts and abilities.

In the parable of the talents, Jesus concluded by promoting the man who was productive with his talent and demoted the man who buried his talent (Matthew 25:14-30). I want to challenge you to use your gift to bless the saints.

I pray that God will stir up our gifts and abilities to work in His church and serve His people.
