The biggest threat to Christianity today is not any external religion. It is not Islam, Buddhism, Traditional African Religion, or even Atheism. I believe the greatest threat to our common salvation is the satanic agenda of false teachers who pervert the gospel for their own belly.
From the Old Testament to the New Testament, we see the work of Satan evident in false prophets to deceive even the elect.
The Bible says in II Corinthians 11:13-15 (NKJV) that,
“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”
In the passage above, Paul teaches that the only way Satan and his human agents can achieve their agenda in the church is to transform themselves into what they are not.
Here are two quick things we can learn from the text above:
#1. Satan Transforms Himself Into An Angel Of Light
Satan is described in the Bible as prince of the power of darkness. So for him to effectively operate with his deceptions, he transforms himself into an angel of light. He pretends to be what he is not to achieve what counters the will of God.
#2. False Prophets Transform Themselves Into Apostles Of Christ
Secondly, Paul says that false apostles transform themselves into apostles of Christ or ministers of righteousness. They are just like their father the devil. They act with pretense to deceive people. They know if they come in their real nature, they will be smoked out so they masquerade as believers of Christ.
How do we counter this?
The question is: how do we practically counter this?
- First, Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 2:11 that we must not be ignorant of the devices of Satan.
We must know and understand and heed what the Bible teaches about Satan and his works. Ephesians 6 teaches that we must put on the whole armour of God.
- Second, Jesus teaches in Matthew 7 that by their fruits they shall be known.
We must not be swept by the charisma and deceptive actions of false prophets but rather see who they are by their fruits. Their real character must tell us who they are.
Are they transformed in their day to day living according to the fruit of the Spirit? Once we know them, we must not associate with them again.
Paul says in Galatians 1:8-9 (NKJV) that,
“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.”
We must beware of false prophets in order to overcome their works.
