Times have changed. The Bible says that people will not endure sound doctrine (2 Timothy 4:3). They will rather have itchy ears to listen to anything.
In the days of the preacher called Noah, the Bible says he preached to the inhabitants of the earth about righteousness for over 100 years but only 8 people were saved (1 Peter 3:20). In today’s ministry terrain, Noah would have been rendered a big failure.
What did Noah actually do?
#1. Noah Was Called By God
The Bible narrates in Genesis 6:8-22 how God called Noah and commissioned him for the work of building the ark and preaching righteousness before judgment befell them.
The important thing about the people God uses is that He comes to them to call them. Abraham was called by God in Genesis 12. David was called by God in 1 Samuel 16. Jeremiah, Isaiah, Hosea, Matthew, Peter, and Paul were all called by God. No wonder Jesus said in John 15:16 that we have not chosen Him but He chose us to go and bear fruit. God calls us to use us.
Each and every believer has been called by God to do His work. We have been called and empowered to bear witness of His name (Acts 1:8). We must not forget our calling. I am very sure that the reason why Noah didn’t give up was that he knew that when God calls a man, He neither leaves nor forsakes him.
#2. Noah Preached The Word Of God
Here is where the work is. God called Noah to give him the assignment to build the ark and also preach righteousness. Noah was called to preach righteousness to a wicked generation (Genesis 6:5). Noah preached righteousness for over 100 years before the flood came (Genesis 6:3, 2 Peter 2:5).
Hebrews 11:7 summarizes Noah’s life when it says,
“By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
Abraham was called as a father of many nations. David was called to be king of Israel. Samson was called to redeem God’s people from oppression. Elijah was called as a prophet to proclaim the truth of God. Peter was called to the Jews. And Paul was called to the Gentiles. Everyone has a specific calling.
God has specifically given all believers the mandate to preach the word of righteousness to our generation. We must proclaim the gospel to this perverse generation. Noah preached, the people heard but did not repent. They loved their sin. And they died in their sins.
Our business as children of God is to preach the gospel and leave the rest to God. Let’s preach the gospel.
