5 Important Lessons From the Movie ‘Rise’ (2022)

I love true life inspirational movies. Many of them make me weep and also learn important lessons to keep me going.

Days ago, I watched the 2022 movie Rise. This is about the life of a Nigerian couple who left their baby boy behind to seek greener pastures in Greece. They went through many troubles and hardships to keep going until they settled down a bit but not without periodically being haunted by the police because they were immigrants without papers. They subsequently gave birth to 4 additional boys.

Their two boys grew interested in basketball and worked their way through with all manner of racial, personal and immigration challenges. Out of dint of hard work, the third boy became a celebrated NBA player.

Here are my top 5 lessons from Rise:

#1. Have A Dream Bigger Than Your Current Situation In Life.

For an immigrant to think of becoming a great basketball player was unthink of. The two boys were doubted, laughed at and initially rejected.

A man with a dream cannot be stopped. His dream drove him to work hard every single day of his life to the point of sometimes even sleeping at the basketball court. If we want to do well in life, we must see well in life.

#2. Have The Tenacity To Face Oppositions Of Life.

Having a dream does not mean you won’t face problems. These young guys faced racial, personal, and immigration problems. The family was faced with financial challenges. One day, the worst happened when their house was locked because they owed rent.

People who have dreams always face challenges. People close to you will doubt you. You will have cultural and sociological problems. Don’t let them stop you.

#3. Have A Passion To Train And Be Better Than You Are Now.

Training is what made them become better than the first day they ever held basketball. Haven had to share one shoe, nothing detared them. They trained tirelessly.

We must employ training as a tool to become better than we are now.

#4. Have God At The Centre Of Your Life.

The greatest gift the parents gave them was having God in their lives and always praying with them before bedtime and in making decisions.

God is not an addition but the foundation of our lives. Without God, there is no meaning to life.

#5. Have Your Family Part Of Your Success.

Never grow to the detriment of your family. He told his agent that in looking for a deal for him, he should know that he will not go without the family. Every deal must include the family.

Rise in life with the people who have always been with you when you were nobody.

This is a life-changing story of how dreaming, daring and hard work can pay off. Let’s look ahead and conquer some mountains.
