What’s Genesis All About?

Scripture Focus: Genesis 1-50

Genesis is the first book of the Bible written by Moses and inspired by the Holy Spirit. It was primarily written to orient the children of Israel about the source of everything – God, creation, sin, Satan, judgment, and redemption of man. Understanding the book of Genesis will help us understand the rest of the Bible.

Let’s briefly consider three main themes of Genesis:

#1. Creation: God Created Everything. (Genesis 1-2)

The first theme we can pick from a broad study of Genesis is that God made the heavens and the earth and everything in it. God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit created all things in six days and rested on the seventh day. John 1 says that everything, including life, comes from God.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)

#2. Fall: The Fall Of Man And Creation. (Genesis 3-11)

The second theme of Genesis is that Satan deceived the woman to cause the fall of man and creation. Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and Genesis 6:11 says the earth was corrupted by sin. The fall of man is his disobedience for the law of God and rather trust in the voice of Satan.

Genesis 6:12 gives us the full extent of the fall of man and creation when it said, “So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.”

#3. Redemption: God’s Plan Of Salvation For Man And Creation. (Genesis 12-50)

The third theme of Genesis is that man cannot save himself from his total depravity. God came to the earth and chose Abraham and his descendants (ultimately Christ Jesus, the Messiah) to reconcile man unto Himself (2 Corinthians 5:19). Just as Satan used man to bring sin and death, God also used the last Adam, Jesus Christ, to bring eternal life (Romans 5:18).

God told Abraham in Genesis 12:3 (NKJV) that, “I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis gives us a snapshot of the whole Bible. The theme of the Bible is God the Father reconciling humanity unto Himself through Jesus Christ the Son to showcase His exceeding riches of grace in time to come (Ephesians 2:6-7). Therefore, salvation is in no one apart from the chosen of God, Jesus Christ, who is the Seed of Abraham that all may enter into the rest of God who believe in Him.

Take Action: Praise God for His provision of perfect cure for our sin.
