Scipture Focus: Genesis 2
If Genesis 1 answers the question of the origin of creation, then Genesis 2 answers the question of the source of life and its sustenance. Even before now, God had declared His intention to create man and make Him the steward of His creation (Genesis 1:26-27). In this chapter, we learn that God made man in His own image and likeness and gave them everything needed to do their work on earth. John 1 says that in Him was life and the light is the life of men.
Genesis 2 teaches us the following truth about our life-giving God:
#1. God made everything and rested. (Genesis 2:1-3)
The Bible teaches in Genesis 1 that God made everything in 6 days and on the 7th day, He rested from all that He did. It’s a picture of work and rest. When we follow God’s pattern of work, we will become very productive and fulfill our stewardship role He has given to us. We cannot play and rest. We must rather work and rest. Also, notice that true rest is in God. Jesus said all who want true rest can have it in Him (Matthew 11:28-30).
#2. God made man and gave him life. (Genesis 2:4-7)
In Genesis 1:26-28, God declared His intention to make man and then in Genesis 2:7, He actually made man from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. What sustains man is partly material and largely the breath of God. We are truly made in the image of God.
#3. God provided everything man needed. (Genesis 2:8-17)
Not only did God actually make man but He provided every material resource for man to live on earth and fulfill their purpose. The raw material resources we find in the belly of the earth are not end in themselves or source of dominance but are meant for the substance of humanity. Even before man was made, he had resources ready.
#4. God gave man work to take care of creation. (Genesis 2:15)
The only way man can properly take care of God’s creation is to “tend and keep it”. God gave man work to live a dignified life and be fruitful. In the parable of the talents, the servants who worked with what was given to them were commended whereas the servant who buried his talent was condemned (Matthew 25:14-30). Jesus said His Father works and therefore He also worked (John 5:17-18). Work is a gift from God to reflect His nature.
#5. God provided man with a life partner. (Genesis 2:18-25)
The last lesson we can take away from Genesis 2 is that God gave man a life partner to help him achieve his purpose on earth. Man was not meant to be alone. People are a gift from God to help us achieve our goals. Jesus Himself had 12 people He worked with. A wife is a favour from the Lord to achieve divine mission.
No wonder Paul noted in Acts 17:28 that in Him we live and move and have our being. God is the Source of life, every resource and people we need to be fruitful on earth and fulfill His purpose on earth. Without acknowledging God, man lives unto destruction and awaits God’s judgment. A life in God must be our ultimate pursuit.
