Genesis 6-10 gives us a snapshot of God’s plan for man – He judges us based on our deeds, destroys the wicked and saves the righteous. In Genesis 6, God assesses man’s heart and finds him guilty and plans to destroy sin and redeem the righteous through Noah.
Genesis 6 can teach us three important lessons:
#1. God assesses and finds man guilty of sin and wickedness. (Genesis 6:1-7)
The life of man is continually before the Lord. The Bible says the Lord knows our heart (John 2:24). Man was guilty before God because their sinful deed had come before God. The Scriptures described man as being wicked and corrupting the earth. There are varying degrees of man’s sins but the fact of the matter is that anyone outside Christ is guilty before the Judge of all the earth. God’s verdict about man is final!
#2. God finds Noah just in his generation. (Genesis 6:8-12)
Even though the whole earth has been overtaken by sin and wickedness of man, God had a remnant in Noah. Noah was just, righteous and walked with God. In every generation, there are basically two kinds of people: those who are given to God and those who are given to the devil. Noah was given to His Maker. He knew that there was a God who existed and honoured His name in His life.
#3. God asked Noah to prepare an ark of safety for the righteous and destroy the wicked. (Genesis 6:13-22)
God’s instruction to Noah was clear, he ought to build an ark according to the pattern of God to preserve the righteous who heed to the voice of God. The unrighteous who reject God’s voice will be destroyed by the flood. It’s clear that God gives both the righteous and the unrighteous grace time to do well. The Bible says in 2 Peter 2:5 that Noah preached righteousness to the ungodly. He is a gracious God who gives sinful man time to repent and act righteously.
God’s intention here is what will ultimately be His intention to two classes of men – the righteous and the unrighteous. Whereas the unrighteous will be destroyed for their sin, the righteous will be saved for their good deeds. Faith in God must be seen in the way we live our lives. James 2:17 that faith without works is dead.
Take Action: Ask yourself if you are living as a righteous person or a wicked person before God.
