Scripture: Genesis 9
After the promises to Noah, God went a step further to cut an everlasting covenant with Noah and generations after him. He established His covenant with him and watched over it to perform it. He is a God of covenant who never fails at what He says He will do. Why? Because there is nothing impossible for Him to do. Nothing can stop God. No one can stop Him. Satan nor evil agenda cannot stop God from bringing to pass His covenant to His people.
What can we learn from Genesis 9?
#1. God’s charge to be fruitful and multiply. (Genesis 9:1-7)
After the destruction of sinful man and living things on the earth, God commanded Noah and his family to be fruitful and multiply. If out of Adam, He populated the whole earth, then Noah and his children were more than enough to fill the earth by this mandate of God. He is a God of potential. He calls things that are not as if they are. If you had seen Noah and his children after the flood you would doubt if such ‘lonely’ people could fill the earth but a few people with God form a majority.
#2. God’s covenant with Noah. (Genesis 9:8-17)
A covenant is more than promises yet a covenant is made of promises. God’s covenant with Noah was that He will not destroy the earth again with flood. That does not mean He will not judge the earth for its deeds. A just God cannot let sin go without being dealt with. He cut a covenant with Noah and gave a sign of the rainbow. He is a covenant keeping God who watches over His word to perform it.
#3. Noah’s good and bad offsprings. (Genesis 9:18-29)
Sin is not outside of us. Sin dwells in us. After the flood and God’s blessings and charge for Noah’s family, two groups of people still emerged from Noah. They were good and bad offspring. Out of the three children, Canaan drew attention to the father’s nakedness and was cursed whilst Shem and Japheth covered the nakedness of their father and were blessed. From these two mindsets came all the people of the earth. You are either blessed or cursed based on what you do.
God promised to establish His covenant with Noah in Genesis 6:18 and He fulfilled it in this chapter with a charge for them to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth. Whatever God says, He is able to bring it to pass without any obstructions. Whatever He requests of us, He is able to bring it to pass.
Take Action: Praise the name of God for being a covenant keeper.
