Be Fruitful And Multiply

Scripture: Genesis 10

In our previous discussion, we learnt that God charged Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply on the earth after the flood. In this section, we see that God’s command was fulfilled. We read of the genealogy of Noah which eventually brought Abraham who became the chosen of God for the Messianic blessing on earth. One person can indeed make a difference who honours God’s word and does it.

What can Genesis 10 teach us today?

#1. Noah’s three sons produce all people and nations. (Genesis 10:1, 32)

It is interesting to learn that God hides potential in obscure places. Noah and his children populated all the earth. Never doubt what God is capable of doing with a handful of people. The command was for them to be fruitful and multiply and they succeeded in doing that. If God promises to do something amazing with you and your nuclear family, just consider Noah and his family as an inspiration and reference point to build your faith in Him.

#2. Out of Japheth came nations. (Genesis 10:2-5)

Japheth was one of the sons of Noah who was blessed by God (Genesis 9:1) and the father (Genesis 9:27) to be fruitful and enlarged. His descendants form the coastland peoples of the Gentiles. They grew into nations. Just one son became fruitful and grew in number. The blessings of God could not be suppressed. Japheth and his offspring had the potential to fulfill God’s command unleash on them.

#3. Out of Ham came nations. (Genesis 10:6-20)

Ham had four sons who grew in their respective families and became nations. He was the cursed of Noah’s children who produced some of the troublesome nations ever to appear on earth. Mentioning a few, consider the Tower of Babel, the Assyrians who conquered Northern Israel, Nineveh noted for their corruption, Philistines who were the arch enemies of Israel, Jebusites, Amorites and Girgashites. Truly, the curse followed them. But ultimately, Christ’s work on the cross canceled every curse on any man. Anyone who comes to Christ is blessed.

#4. Out of Shem came nations. (Genesis 10:21-31)

The third son of Noah who was blessed to be fruitful and fill the earth was Shem whose descendants brought forth Abraham, the father of the Jews. He also grew in descendants and multiplied and became nations. Out of his 5 sons, they grew into families, languages, lands and nations. The Jewish people can trace their roots to Shem who fulfilled God’s agenda.

God is able to empower few people to fulfill His plan of filling the earth with people and dominating it. God’s potential for growth is available to both the righteous and the unrighteous. His common grace is available to both the righteous and the unrighteous until Christ comes to separate the wheat from the tares. His grace is extended to the unrighteous so that they can amend their ways and draw nigh to Him.

Take Action: Thank God for making you fruitful to fill and dominate the earth.
