More Than Enough

Genesis 13

In the traditional African marketplace, you will discover that there are many sellers of particular goods, say, tomatoes. Each one starts the day believing that she will not go home empty handed. If there are 10 sellers, each person trusts that their customers will come to buy or they will be visited by first timers to buy. Market women believe that there are more than enough customers for each one. Sometimes we wrestle over a few resources and forget we have enough for each person. Abraham and Lot’s servants fought over where they dwelt because there was not enough land to accommodate their livestock. Abraham acted wisely and God visited him and assured him of his promised land.

Three important lessons we can learn are:

#1. God blesses the work of our hands. (Genesis 13:1-4)

Abraham was into animal husbandry and precious metals and the Lord blessed the work of his hands. God made him rich in what he was engaged in. Indeed, in Genesis 24, his oldest servant affirmed that it was the Lord who blessed Abraham with riches and properties. Deuteronomy says that it is the Lord who gives us power to make wealth. We can learn that God blesses people to be rich for His cause. It is not outside of God’s potential to pick a man or woman and make them wealthy to push the agenda of God.

#2. We must think highly of others when dealing with them. (13:5-13)

Although Abraham and Lot’s servants fought over the dwelling place due to their livestock, Abraham wisely negotiated with his nephew to take the good part of the land so that he would take what was left. Lot agreed and went to where he considered promising. The Scriptures say we must think highly of others than ourselves. Abraham demonstrated that virtue when dealing with Lot. We must learn to make way for others. We must trust that God can provide enough for each person on earth and still have some to spare.

#3. God can give us more than humanly possible. (Genesis 13:14-18)

Lot thought he chose the best but God gave Abraham unlimited land. Just as He promised him in Genesis 12, God reiterated that Abraham would have more than enough land. He gave him a blank cheque to write how much he wanted God to give to him. In the case of Solomon, God asked him to say what He wanted Him to do for him. When we put our trust in God, He gives His best to us. In whatever area we are trusting Him for, He can give us unlimited access to choose from and fulfill His plans for our lives.

In this chapter, Abraham separated from Lot due to limited space but God opens him up and gives him a bigger inheritance. He had already promised and was able to fulfill. If we follow our sight, we shall become like Lot who chooses based on what he saw but when we trust God, we can have exceedingly, above all that we can think or imagine. God has enough to give to each one of us.

Take Action: Ask God to give you access to unlimited opportunities as you put your trust in Him.
