Stronger Than Your Enemies

Genesis 14

Abraham was stronger than his enemies. When 4 nations’ armies defeated 5 nations and captured Lot, Abraham raised an army from his household made up of 318 servants to rescue his nephew and his properties. In spite of the strife between his servants and that of Lot’s that led to Lot’s breakaway from him, he still risked his life and that of his servants to save Lot. One man and 318 servants with the Lord were stronger than the coalition of 4 nations’ army. Our God is strong in battle.

What can we learn from this chapter?

#1. Adversities happen in life. (Genesis 14:1-12)

The first lesson we learn from this chapter is that adversities happen in life we do not have control over. Righteous Lot (2 Peter 2:7) was minding his own business when a battle brought to his doorstep saw him and his properties captured by 4 coalition armies. In life, you don’t always need to go where trouble is. It can visit you and create problems for you. In 1 Samuel 30, when David returned to his base, the Amalekites had ransacked his territory and taken his wives. Trouble can visit anybody like the way Lot was captured as a prisoner of war. It is a fact of life.

#2. Attempt to help other people in life. (Genesis 14:13-17)

Our second lesson we can take away from this chapter is that when Abraham heard about the unfortunate incident, he marshaled trained servants and risked his life to rescue his nephew. He did not allow the strife between his servants and Lot’s servants in the past to determine his attitude towards this grave issue of Lot’s life and properties. Sometimes when we hear what others are going through, that is the time we replay what bad things they may have done to deserve what they are going through now. A godly man does not rejoice over the adversities of even his enemies. Proverbs 24:17-18 advises that we must not rejoice over the fall of our enemies. We must rather risk our lives and attempt to rescue them. With God on his side, Abraham took the bold atep and rescued his nephew.

#3. Appreciate God in your victories. (Genesis 14:18-24)

The last lesson we can pick from the chapter is that we must learn to appreciate God for giving us victory. Abraham clearly acknowledged that it was God who helped him and not man. He had already said He will make him a great nation. Even without the children in the picture, God demonstrated how strong Abraham would be as a nation that no other nations could defeat him nor his descendants. Absolute trust in God makes us stronger and unstoppable.

To be stronger than your enemies is to be able to defeat them when they come against you. Abraham was made so strong that he defeated 4 nations’ armies to rescue his nephew Lot. Indeed, with God, all things are possible including an army of 318 servants defeating thousands of forces.

Take Action: Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might to defeat all your enemies.
