Too Many To Be Counted

Scripture: Genesis 15

God had promised to make Abraham a great nation which meant having many descendants as the dust of the earth (Genesis 13:16). Knowing that Abraham did not fully understand what He meant, He clarified it in this chapter and also cut an everlasting covenant with him and finally told him what will happen in the near future. The God we serve does not just speak to tickle us but to help us understand what He intends to do in our lives. His covenant with Abraham was to say that He was serious about His promises and will ensure their fulfillment.

What can we glean from this chapter?

#1. God can make His intentions clear to us. (Genesis 15:1-6)

God had given many promises to Abraham and also reiterated the same to him at different points in his journey. In this chapter, the first lesson we can learn is that He made His promises of giving many children to Abraham very clear. He believed God could make it but he didn’t know how He would do it, hence his intervention to clarify His promises. He told Abraham point blank that He will give him children from his own loins as many as the stars of the sky. When God makes His promises to us and we are unclear, we must go back to Him and request clarity. Abraham asked God questions to be clear about what He will do.

#2. God can cut His covenant with us. (Genesis 15:7-21)

Abraham then went a step further to ask God how he would inherit the land. Almighty God responded by cutting a covenant with Abraham to establish His promises. God was just letting ABraham know that He was serious about what He had said and He would fulfill it. He then told him of what was going to happen in the near future. God’s promises are sure but when He goes further to establish His covenant, it makes the issue more serious. Whatever He said to Abraham, He was able to make them happen. God is a covenant keeper as we have said in our previous discussions.

When God came to Abraham in Genesis 12, He gave the promises of the covenant but here, He cuts the covenant and seals it on His part. Two ingredients of the covenant are pronounced here; to give him numerous descendants and also give him the land. Will God fail? Can someone else stop Him? Never! He can give us more than we can count indeed.

Take Action: Praise the Lord that He is a covenant keeper who will fulfill His promises.
