Is Anything Too Hard For The Lord?

Genesis 18

For the second time, God visits Abraham on the matter of the promised son and Sarah laughed just like Abraham laughed in Genesis 17. Abraham then intercedes for Sodom. This chapter demonstrates to us two natures of God: God is gracious and just in His dealings with man. He is gracious because in spite of Abraham and Sarah’s doubt, He decrees the birth of their son in an advanced age. He is indeed the righteous judge of all the earth because right and wrong and judgment thereof is determined by Him alone.

What can we learn from Genesis 18 to help us in our walk with the Lord?

#1. God is able to make the impossible possible. (Genesis 18:1-15)

The first lesson we can pick from Genesis 18 is that God is able to make what seems very impossible to man to become possible. Abraham entertained the angels and for the second time, God spoke to him about the birth of Isaac in their old age. Sarah laughed about the news and wondered how that would be possible. It is ok to start with doubt but it is not ok to continue in doubt in our walk with God. If we continue in doubt, we cannot receive in faith. What God declares is what will be established. We must trust what He says whether we know how it will happen or not. There is nothing that can hinder what God says He will do.

#3. God is just in His dealings with man. (Genesis 18:16-33)

In the next scene of the chapter, we see that God decided to disclose what He intended to do with Sodom and Gomorrah to Abraham. The city had sinned and despised the laws of God in favour of wickedness. God chose to come down to unleash His punishment on them. Abraham appeals to God to spare them but could not get 10 righteous people to preserve the city from being destroyed. God is just in His dealings with man. He judges us based on our own deeds. Abraham’s intercession could not save the city because righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach (Proverbs 14:34). God’s justice will not let the sinner go unpunished. We must intercede for the hearts of men to change from sin to righteousness so that they can be saved from destruction.

God’s promises are sure! He reiterated His promise to give Abraham a son called Isaac. Even though they doubted, God is able to still do what He says. Abraham then intercedes for the sinful nation of Sodom but could not turn around the righteous judgment of God.

Take Action: Trust God to do what He has declared to do for you.
