Genesis 20
Abraham lied the second time about his wife to save himself and the marriage but God fights for him when Abimelech takes Sarah as his wife. God threatened him to return the wife and be prayed for. He did that and it went well with him. When the unrighteous come against us, they go against the Lord. Remember that when Saul was persecuting the church, Jesus Christ asked him why he was persecuting Him. We are one with the Lord. He is in us and we are in Him.
What can we learn from this chapter?
#1. The believer is one with God. (Genesis 20:1-14)
Obviously, Abraham felt vulnerable and so he lied again about his wife that she is his sister. It made Abimelech to take her as his wife and God settled issues with Abimelech. Taking Abraham’s wife was coming against God because He was one with Abraham in covenant. Paul said in Romans 8 that nothing can come against the love of God for us. Nothing can take us from the able hand of God. Coming against us is coming against God. We are in Him and He is in us. This spiritual reality must govern our walk with the Lord and build our confidence that nothing can break us.
#2. God can favour and use us to bring restoration to other people. (Genesis 20:17-18)
After God instructed Abimelech to return Abraham’s wife and he did, he also gave land and precious minerals to Abraham and his wife to make peace with them. Abraham prayed for him and his household and restored what had gone wrong. God chooses whom to use. He called Abraham a prophet. He used him to bring restoration to Abimelech. Our intercessory prayers are very powerful and profound. Abraham stood in the gap for Sodom and here again, he stood in the gap for Abimelech.
God has promised that He will fight those who are against us. In this chapter, we see a classic example of how He fights for us and favours us.
Take Action: Thank God for fighting your unseen battles for you.
