How To See God

Genesis 28

God does not reveal Himself to us in the same manner. For Jacob, it was when he was alone on his journey to his uncle’s place when God revealed Himself to him in a dream and reiterated the promise He made to Abraham. When we are in the will of God, He will reveal Himself to us the way He wants to. Even in our loneliest moments, He will still reveal Himself to us.

Genesis 28 has three main areas we can look at:

#1. It is good to honour your parents. (Genesis 28:1-5)

The first thing we notice is that Isaac gave a final blessing to his obedient son and sent him away to Uncle Laban to look for a wife. The parents wanted him to do what was right before God just like his father did when Abraham looked for a wife for him from the same place. They blessed and sent him away. People who obey and honour their parents obtain blessings from them. If you disregard them, you will not flow in their blessings. Our parents are good points of contact for the blessings of the Lord. we must position ourselves well to receive from them.

#2. Dishonouring your parents attracts curses. (Genesis 28:6-9)

Jacob honoured his parents but Esau was a big dishonour to his parents. He intentionally went for the daughters of Ishmael and married them. He just wanted to bring more pain to the parents for missing the blessing to Jacob. Some people can always find excuses for their own bad choices in life. When we fail to correct our own character flaws, we tend to look external and blame other people for where we are in life. We can only observe such people and avoid their choices.

#3. Encounter with God. (Genesis 28:10-22)

The last thing we notice in this chapter is that Jacob had a major encounter with God which defined his life. In a dream, God appeared to him and made promises to him. In return, he made vows to God if He will go with him and prosper him. When we follow order, we encounter God. We cannot be disobedient and still expect God to show up. Matthew 5:8 teaches that blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. We see God when we honour His word through the people He places in our lives.

If you desire to see the hand of God in your life, Genesis 28 teaches us that we must be obedient to the authorities God brings our way. When we honour God’s people in our lives, we experience God in a much deeper way that will affect all areas of our lives.

Take Action: Ask God to give you wisdom to follow and honour the authority in your life.
