God Delivers Us From Harm

Genesis 31

Acting by divine timing is very crucial if we want to walk with the Lord. Two things fuelled Jacob’s decision to move back to the promised land – Laban’s family hated him and God visited him and instructed him to move. But he didn’t move without opposition from Laban. Our godly steps will not be without challenges by other people who disagree with us. God is with us to deliver us from every opposition. Paul said that a great and effective door had opened but there were many adversaries.

What can we learn?

#1. Obey the voice of the Lord. (Genesis 31:1-21)

Two main things caused Jacob to decide to leave His Uncle’s place for the place God had promised Abraham. One, Laban’s children were envious of Jacob because of his success in life. Two, God instructed him to leave. The first is as important as the second. We must discern when to leave and when to stay. Know the divine timing for important moves in your life.

#2. God will fight for you. (Genesis 31:22-42)

When Laban got to know that Jacob had left, he mobilized people to pursue him. He concluded that Jacob was taking his children away. He forgot how he mistreated him for all the years of toil. Some people want to mistreat others and still keep them where they are. God was willing to fight for Jacob and so He warned Laban not to speak ill against him. Whatever step we make in life will not be easy to attain. In the gospel, when Jesus asked His disciples to move to the other side, they encountered boisterous wind. Nothing is easy to attain but God is still with us to see us through.

#3. God makes our enemies to be at peace with us. (Genesis 31:43-55)

It came to pass that after the wild allegations Laban made against Jacob, he found nothing to build any justifiable case. So he finally made a covenant with him to treat his children well. He made peace with him. When God is with us, even our enemies are turned to be at peace with us. The same thing happened to Isaac when Abimelech made peace with him after a conflict. The God we serve can turn the heart of people who hate us to like us. He truly works for our good.

God is faithful to keep His own from harm. The Psalmist says that though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we fear no evil for God is with us. He instructs us, protects us and makes our enemies to be at peace with us. May His name be glorified.

Take Action: Ask God to deliver you from any harm of the devil.
