Genesis 42
When I was much younger and staying in a very small town in Ghana, I used to dream of coming to Accra to make a living like the people from our town who came back from the city with a different lifestyle. In 2002, I had the opportunity to travel to Accra for my High School education and then continued with my tertiary education. It seemed far-fetched when I was dreaming but I am currently living that dream having lived in Accra for 22 years now.
In Genesis 37 when Joseph dreamt of greatness that his parents and brothers would bow down to him, they didn’t believe him nor did he know how it would materialize. He provided a sterling solution that brought him to power from being a mere prisoner. His dream came to pass for the purpose of preserving His family from death of famine.
What can we learn?
#1. God provides for our needs ahead of time. (Genesis 42:1-24)
The first lesson we can learn is that the dream of Joseph was tied to the preservation of God’s people from the death of famine in the whole world. Much as he dreamt privately, it was a godly agenda to save His people. Hence, even before the crisis came, God worked in Joseph’s life to become Prime Minister of Egypt for the sake of His people. Just as Jesus died to save His people from their sins, Joseph went through slavery and adversities to save his kinsmen from destruction. Even before lack came, He had His plans in place.
#2. Deal with people wisely. (Genesis 42:25-38)
The second lesson is that we must learn to wisely deal with other people. Joseph did not immediately embrace and welcome his brothers when he met them for obvious reasons that he wanted to be sure that their father and his brother were alive. Once beaten, twice shy. He knew how brothers sold him and so he needed to deal wisely with them through all the drama of sending them back to bring Benjamin and keeping Simeon. Deal with people wisely before they treat you badly again.
We can never tell the details of how God will bring our dreams to pass but God will do it anyway. Nothing can stop Him. Beyond that, we must learn to deal with people in our lives.
Take Action: Commit the process into the hands of God.
