Exodus 1
God’s promise in Genesis 15 was being fulfilled in the descendants of Abraham. They had been preserved in Egypt, grew in numbers to become a nation and now they were oppressed like never before but God was with them. God’s people always prosper in affliction and danger. Psalm 23 says that even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we shall fear no evil for God is with us. The presence of God makes all the difference in our lives.
What can we learn?
#1. God can make us fruitful in a foreign land. (Exodus 1:1-7)
Israel was fruitful even in the land of Egypt. They grew and multiplied from just 70 people who came to Egypt to many people. No one in Egypt could stop them from being fruitful in the foreign land because they were fulfilling God’s plan for their lives. After the generation of those who came to Egypt died, they multiplied in number. Fruitfulness has been built into us. We are born to be fruitful to fulfill God’s command to be fruitful and multiply. When Jesus came to the fig tree looking for fruits and could not find any, He cursed it to die forever. When God blesses us, He comes expecting fruits.
#2. God can make us fruitful in afflictions. (Exodus 1:8-14)
Many people blame circumstances or people who are antagonistic to their dreams as causation to their unfruitfulness. Even though the Jewish people found themselves in a foreign land with a hateful Pharaoh who inflicted unbearable labour for them, yet still they grew and multiplied. If God is for us, who can be against us? Nothing can suppress our fruitfulness in life. We must be determined to blossom in the face of any contrary wind.
#3. God can make us fruitful in the face of danger. (Exodus 1:15-22)
The last lesson we can take away is that Israel prospered in the face of threats of death. The Pharaoh did everything he could to stop them from giving birth to male children but his demonic agenda did not flourish. We are of God. He who lives in us is bigger than the one in the world. If God is with us, what can man do to us? Absolutely nothing! It is the same God who was with the Jews who is with us to prosper us when threats of death loom.
He who God has blessed, no one can stop from being fruitful and multiplying. Israel was bound to become a nation unto God and Pharaoh couldn’t stop it. May the Lord make you fruitful irrespective of what is going on around you.
Take Action: Praise God that He has made you unstoppable and fruitful in your land.
