Power over other powers

Exodus 7

Creation is the handiwork of God. He made all things and can use them the way He pleases. In this chapter, God promised Moses to show Pharaoh and Egypt who He is through multiple wonders. He turned the rod to snake and swallowed other snakes. He turned every water body in Egypt to blood to demonstrate His power over their gods. Our God is sovereign and powerful than any human nor spiritual entity. Trusting in Him is a vote of confidence that He can override any work of evil in our lives.

What can we take away?

#1. God has power to do wonders. (Exodus 7:1-7)

The first lesson we learn here is that God has supernatural power to do wonders He wants to do. He told Moses that since Pharaoh had decided to resist His purposes, He will demonstrate His power for him and his people to admit that He is God. God was not bragging but making a statement of fact that He is capable of doing something wonderful. This was for two fold purposes; one, to show Israel the God they believe and, two, to show Egypt the God the Jews have. It was a power play. A trust in God must go with trust in His supernatural ability to do wonders. We cannot say we trust God for who He is and not trust Him for what He is capable of doing. His nature and works are the same.

#2. God’s power overshadows that of other gods. (Exodus 7:8-13)

In a real practical sense, Moses and Aaron went back to Pharaoh to demand the release of the people to go and serve their God. The first time they tried, it backfired. They are now here to try again. This time around, God’s power of turning rod to snake was demonstrated and then Pharaoh’s gods also turned rod to snake. But Aaron’s snake swallowed that of Pharaoh’s. It was to demonstrate the power of God over all other forces. There is no one as powerful as our God. God will allow evil to do its tricks and overpower it. If you put your trust in God, know that He can overshadow any other power under the sun. He made all things.

#3. God has power over all water bodies. (7:14-25)

The last lesson is that when Pharaoh still proved stubborn to let the people go, God unleashed the first plague of turning all water bodies in Egypt to blood. The Egyptians had gods in virtually everything God created. They made gods of the water bodies they trusted but God’s power demonstrated that He is the owner of all things. He made all things and can turn it the way He wanted it to be. He could make the water dry. He could make the water split into two. He made blood to overtake it to show His power over what they trusted in.

The Lord is a Man of war. In Exodus 6, He declared war and by Exodus 7, He started unleashing His wonders on Egypt for them to know that He is the Lord over everything. (Exodus 7:4-5)

Take Action: Think of the fact that God uses ordinary everyday people for His great work.
