God visits His people

Exodus 19

Up until now, Moses had only gone to God and heard Him and reported to the people. In this chapter, God wants to start a new journey with His people to establish His covenant with them (Exodus 19:5-6) and Moses as their leader (Exodus 19:9). He is a relational God who wants to be intimate with His people. God’s not dead. He is alive and seeks to visit His people.

What can we learn from Exodus 19 to be intimate with God?

#1. Movement advances. (Exodus 19:1-2)

The children of God moved from Rephidim to the Wilderness of Sinai based on God’s word. They encamped before the mountain. They did not settle where they had been. They made a move to where God wanted them to be. It is important we learn to walk in the Spirit and not our own agenda. God wants us to listen to Him and move in advancement to where He wants us to be. Movement in the right direction brings progress in our lives. When we move in the right direction, we are getting closer to our dreams and goals. Staying where you are will not bring any meaningful progress when you are supposed to move.

#2. Obedience rewards. (Exodus 19:3–9)

The next thing the Lord told Moses was for him to tell the people to be obedient to His commandments so that they will be a special people to Him. Moses told the people and they agreed to do what was required of them. God said that if they were obedient, they would be rewarded as His special people. Isaiah the prophet said that if we are willing and obedient, we shall eat the good of the land. James says that if we continue in the perfect law of liberty, we shall be transformed into the image of Christ. God’s reward system favours those who are obedient to His word to perform it.

#3. Sanctification attracts. (Exodus 19:10-25)

The last thing we noticed was God inviting Moses again to inform him to prepare the people for His visitation. How were they going to do that? It will be through cleansing themselves from every impurity. God visited in thunder and smoke of fire. This brought the fear of God in the people and established Moses as the leader. Sanctification is the believers lifestyle. It is how we prepare ourselves to invite and walk with the Lord. Paul said in the book of Thessalonians that sanctification is the will of God. Jesus said in Matthew 5 that the pure in heart will see the Lord. We must continually walk in holiness if we want to see the Lord.

God is not only a redeemer but a relational God. He came down to His people to establish His covenant with them.

Take Action: Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
