Introduction
When I became a born-again believer in 2010, I wondered how I could serve in the house of the Lord. If you had asked me which area I was passionate about, I wouldn’t have had a clue.
Over time, and through the discipleship process of our church, I learned there is a simple way to discover where you can serve in the house of the Lord.
Finding Where to Serve in Your Church
- What Do You Love to Do?
Whether you are a new member or an old member eager to serve the Lord, the first step is to ask yourself: What do I love to do? Perhaps you love singing, ushering people, playing an instrument, evangelizing, or cleaning the church. These interests can guide you toward areas where you can serve effectively. We all have something we love to do without concern for financial gain. Don’t disregard these passions; they could be the key to discovering where you can serve best with your gifts. Never waste what you love to do. Use it to serve your Maker. - What Do You Hate to See?
Another question to help you find your place in the house of the Lord is: What do I hate to see happening in my church or other churches? It’s easy to join others in complaining about problems in the church without taking action. However, if something bothers you, it may be within your power to change it. When David saw Goliath blaspheming the name of the Lord and the entire army of Israel incapacitated, he took up the challenge and defeated him. If you don’t like what is going on, take action to address the problem. Make a list of things you hate to see and start tackling them. For instance, when I relocated to another branch of our church in Accra, I felt strongly that there should be a Young Professionals Group. I took steps to write a concept and mobilized some young professionals to start it. Take initiative to correct what is wrong.
The Way Forward
When you find answers to these questions, what should you do next?
Identify which department in your church aligns with your passion or the problem you want to solve. Once you are clear, join that department or help the church create one to address the issue.
For example, if your church lacks high-quality sound production for worship services, join the sound department. Your innovative ideas and training can improve the worship experience, allowing God’s people to hear the word and build their faith, as faith comes by hearing the word of God.
Conclusion
As you can see, finding your place in the church can significantly aid the spiritual growth of the saints. Whatever you do, no matter how small, can help others become more faithful to God.
Unleash your gifts, talents, and experiences to help the body of Christ minister to one another.
