5 Reasons Why Africans Pray So Much

Introduction

African churches are filled with worshippers who cry out to God day and night, seeking divine intervention for life’s challenges.

Some people belittle the power of prayer, labeling those who pray as lazy or lacking work to do. However, the African worldview embraces spirituality, believing in both the physical and the spiritual realms, as well as the existence of both good and bad spirits. When an African becomes born again, prayer is taken very seriously.

Here are five reasons why Africans take prayer seriously:

1. We Believe All of Life Is Spiritual

The African Christian’s belief in the supernatural, apart from the physical, leads them to trust in a supreme being for help when needed. The Bible says in the Gospel of John that the spiritual gave birth to the physical. To Africans, the spiritual is as real as the physical.

2. We Have Many Problems

Another reason African Christians pray so much is the underdevelopment of their societies, creating a need for divine intervention at every point in life. The Bible says that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them from them all. When we cry to Him, He helps us.

3. We Believe in the Existence of Evil Powers

African believers pray more than those in advanced nations because they believe in the existence of evil spirits that cause harm spiritually and then manifest physically. Other people want to mostly use science to explain virtually everything. The Bible teaches that Satan and his fallen angels bring harm to people. Prayer is our weapon to invite God to intervene.

4. We Believe in the Power of God

Africans pray fervently because they trust in the power of God to defeat the evil powers of Satan. The Bible says in Ephesians 6 to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. By putting on the whole armor of God, which includes prayer, we can ward off the works of darkness.

5. We Believe Bad Things Happen to Good People

African believers pray with intensity because they understand that bad things can happen to good people. The Bible says that when David became king of Israel, the Philistines attacked him simply because he was the leader. David prayed, and God gave him direction. If you fail to pray, evil will overtake you.

Conclusion

Prayer is crucial not only to African Christians but to every living Christian. It is our way of showing trust in the God of all flesh. When we put our trust in Him, we will receive answers to our requests.
