A. W. Tozer: Life, Conversion, and Ministry Lessons

2–3 minutes

Introduction

Aiden Wilson Tozer (A. W. Tozer) was one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century. He authored many classic books on Christian living that continue to help people grow in their faith today.

Tozer was a close friend of Leonard Ravenhill, a British revivalist who later moved to America. Some of Tozer’s more than 40 books include the popular “The Pursuit of God,” “The Knowledge of the Holy,” and “The Attributes of God.”

How Was Tozer Saved by Grace?

At the age of 17, Tozer heard a street preacher share the gospel in Akron, Ohio. The preacher said, “If you don’t know how to be saved… just call on God, saying, ‘Lord, be merciful to me a sinner.'” Struck by the simplicity and directness of the message, Tozer went home, climbed up to the attic, and followed this advice, committing his life to Christ in prayer. This moment marked his conversion and the beginning of his spiritual journey.

After his conversion, Tozer quickly became involved in church activities and felt a strong calling to ministry. He developed a lifelong hunger for God, teaching himself theology and dedicating his life to the ministry of the Word of God as a pastor, teacher, and writer.

What Lessons Can We Learn?

Here are three lessons from the life of A. W. Tozer:

  1. God’s Purpose for Our Lives is Deeply Rooted in Him
Jesus said that without Him, we can do nothing. Therefore, God’s purpose for any human being is rooted in Him. Outside of Him, we can be fruitful but can never attain our true purpose. Tozer chased God’s purpose for his life.
  2. We Must Pursue God for Ourselves
There is a temptation for preachers to focus only on teaching others how to seek and serve God, while they themselves remain distant from God. Tozer was a true seeker who practiced what he preached. Leonard Ravenhill noted that Tozer could spend three hours in his office worshiping and praying. His heart hungered for the One who saved him.
  3. We Must Give Ourselves Wholly to the Ministry God Gives Us
We must fully dedicate ourselves to the ministry God assigns to us. Tozer was not known for performing miracles or evangelism, but for teaching, pastoring, and writing. He identified his ministry and served it with all his heart. The apostle Paul said he magnified his office, and Tozer did the same with his.

Conclusion

From the life of A. W. Tozer, we learn that the Lord is interested in every life. Tozer’s life exemplifies the importance of sticking to the ministry God gives us after we are converted from the kingdom of darkness.
