Who is Jesus Christ? 10 Essential Biblical Truths You Need to Know

Introduction

In our previous exploration of core biblical doctrines, we delved into the theology of God (theology proper), discovering that God is unchanging—yesterday, today, and forever.

Today, we turn our attention to the doctrine of Jesus Christ, or Christology, digging deep into Hebrews 1, which provides profound insights about Jesus Christ in just four verses.

Hebrews 1:1-4 (NKJV) says:

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

From this text, we can deduce ten biblical truths about who Jesus is and what He has done and continues to do for us. As you read, reflect on how these truths relate to and affect your life and relationship with God.

10 Biblical Truths about Jesus Christ

1. Jesus is the Revelation of God

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.”

Jesus is the culmination of God’s revelation to humanity. While God used many means to reveal Himself in the past, He now reveals Himself through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son. Jesus declared in Matthew 5 that He came to fulfill the law, and John 1 reveals Him as the Word made flesh. In Revelation, He is the sword of the Spirit. Jesus embodies the ultimate revelation of God’s nature and will.

2. Jesus is the Son of God

“Has in these last days spoken to us by His Son.”

Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, sent to redeem humanity (John 3:16). Peter declared Jesus as the Son of the Living God in Matthew 16. Through Jesus, God reconciled the world to Himself, and we are entrusted with this message of reconciliation.

3. Jesus is the Heir of All Things

“Whom He has appointed heir of all things.”

Jesus is the heir of all creation, endowed with power, glory, and honor due to His obedience. Everything was made for Him, and He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth.

4. Jesus is the Creator of All Things

“Through whom also He made the worlds.”

Colossians 1:16 declares that all things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him. John 1 emphasizes that nothing was made without Jesus. He is more than a religious leader; He is the eternal Creator.

5. Jesus is God

“Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.”

Jesus is fully God and fully man. Isaiah prophesied Him as “God with us” (Emmanuel). In the New Testament, Jesus affirmed His divinity by declaring His oneness with the Father (John 10:30). Paul in Philippians 2:6 confirms His equality with God. Jesus embodies the fullness of God in human form.

6. Jesus Sustains All Things

“And upholding all things by the word of His power.”

Jesus not only created all things but also sustains them. He maintains the universe by His powerful word, restraining evil and promoting good. This truth assures us that Jesus can preserve us from destruction and keep us from falling.

7. Jesus Died to Save Us from Sin

“When He had by Himself purged our sins.”

Jesus is the Savior of mankind, securing our redemption through His blood on the cross. Unlike the temporary sacrifices of the Old Testament, His sacrifice is once for all. His blood cleanses us from all sin and guilt, offering salvation to anyone who believes in Him.

8. Jesus is Seated at the Right Hand of God

“Sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven and sits at the right hand of God, interceding for us. This position of authority signifies His completed work of salvation and His ongoing intercessory role for believers.

9. Jesus is Superior to Angels

“Having become so much better than the angels.”

Jesus, the Creator of all, including angels, is superior to them. He accomplished the redemption of humanity, a feat that even angels marvel at. In heaven, angels worship Him, and He has authority over both holy and fallen angels.

10. Jesus Has a Superior Name

“As He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

Jesus’ name is above every name, bestowed upon Him because of His redemptive work. Philippians 2:9-11 states that at His name, every knee will bow. His name holds power over all principalities and powers, providing victory to those who call upon it.

Conclusion

These ten biblical truths reveal who Jesus was, who He is, and who He will be when He returns. In Him, all things become meaningful and purposeful.

As Acts 17:28 affirms, “In Him we live and move and have our being.” Reflecting on these truths strengthens our relationship with Jesus and deepens our faith.
