What is Man? God’s Original Purpose for Man

Introduction

In the complex tapestry of human existence, the question “What is the purpose of man?” has been a subject of contemplation and debate across cultures and religions.

Some assert that man was created to worship God, others to serve Him, and still others to fulfill His will. While these perspectives capture facets of the truth, a comprehensive understanding requires delving into the foundational scriptures of creation.

By examining the biblical texts, particularly Genesis 1:26-28, we can uncover God’s original intention for humanity and the divine blueprint for our existence.

The Creation of Man: A Divine Blueprint

To discern God’s intention for man, we must start at the beginning—Creation. Genesis 1:26-28 (NKJV) provides a clear articulation of God’s purpose: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”

The Nature of Man

1. Man as a Divine Creation

Genesis 1:26 reveals that man was made by God, not as a product of random evolution but as a deliberate act of divine will. The phrase “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” emphasizes that humanity was created with unique characteristics that reflect God’s nature. This resemblance is not physical but pertains to spiritual, intellectual, and moral capacities.

2. Man in God’s Image

Being created in the image and likeness of God implies that humans share certain attributes with the Creator. We are endowed with the ability to reason, create, love, and exercise free will. This divine image sets humanity apart from all other forms of creation and establishes our inherent worth and dignity.

The Purpose of Man

1. Dominion and Stewardship

God’s command for man to “have dominion” over all living things establishes our role as stewards of creation. This dominion is not about exploitation but responsible management and care for the earth and its creatures. The scope of this mandate includes:

a. Marine Life: “Rule over the fish of the sea” (Genesis 1:20-23). Human ingenuity has led to the exploration and stewardship of marine ecosystems.

b. Avian Life: “Rule over the birds of the air” (Genesis 1:20-23). Aviation and environmental conservation efforts reflect our dominion over the skies.

c. Terrestrial Life: “Rule over the cattle” (Genesis 1:24-25). Agricultural advancements and wildlife management exemplify our stewardship.

d. The Entire Earth: “Rule over all the earth” (Genesis 1:24-25). Human exploration and environmental conservation underscore our responsibility.

e. Creeping Things: “Rule over every creeping thing” (Genesis 1:24-25). Technological innovations have enabled us to manage and protect diverse terrestrial species.

2. Fruitfulness and Multiplication

In Genesis 1:28, God commands humanity to “be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.” This directive encompasses both biological reproduction and the cultivation of human society. It calls for the establishment of families, communities, and civilizations that reflect God’s order and creativity.

Discovering Individual Purpose

Discovering one’s purpose is a journey that involves introspection, community input, and divine revelation. Matthew 16:13-17 (NKJV) illustrates this process through Peter’s confession of Christ:

1. Others’ Opinions: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Understanding others’ perspectives can provide insights but is not definitive.

2. Close Relationships: “Who do you say that I am?” Trusted individuals can offer valuable reflections on our purpose.

3. Personal Revelation: “For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” Personal experiences and inner convictions play a crucial role.

4. Divine Revelation: “But My Father who is in heaven.” Ultimately, understanding our divine purpose requires seeking God’s guidance.

Living Out God’s Intention

1. Natural Talents and Abilities

Genesis 4:19-22 (NKJV) highlights the diverse talents God has bestowed upon humanity. From music to craftsmanship, these gifts are meant to be developed and used for the betterment of society and the glory of God.

2. Spiritual Authority

Luke 10:19 (NKJV) underscores the spiritual authority given to believers: “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” This authority empowers us to overcome spiritual challenges and live victoriously.

Conclusion

Psalm 8:3-9 (NKJV) encapsulates the wonder of God’s intention for humanity: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!”

Understanding God’s intention for man reveals a profound truth: we are created with purpose, endowed with divine attributes, and entrusted with the stewardship of creation.

As we seek to fulfill our individual and collective purposes, let us pray for wisdom and grace to align our lives with God’s original design.

Prayer: Ask the Lord to open your eyes to discover your part in His original purpose for man; pray for the grace to pursue what He reveals to you.
