Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah: A Legacy of Faith and Leadership

Introduction

Apostle Professor Kwadwo Nimfour Opoku Onyinah, born on July 22, 1954, in Aduman, Ashanti Region of Ghana, is a distinguished Ghanaian theologian, televangelist, composer, and the fifth Chairman of The Church of Pentecost.

He completed his basic education at Yamfo Catholic Middle School and later trained in carpentry and joinery at Sunyani Technical and Tamale Technical Institutes. Despite his technical background, his calling into pastoral ministry in 1976 marked the beginning of a significant transformation in his life.

Apostle Onyinah’s commitment to theological education is remarkable. He earned a Master of Theology in Applied Theology from Regents Theological College in 1998 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies from the University of Birmingham in 2002. 

His academic achievements culminated in his promotion to Associate Professor in 2016, a recognition that underscored his scholarly contributions to theological studies.

Ministry and Leadership

Early Ministry

Onyinah’s full-time ministry with The Church of Pentecost began in 1976. His first assignment was as a district overseer in Wa, Northern Region. Over the years, he held various significant positions, including district pastor in Kumasi, Ashanti Regional Head, and Koforidua Regional Head. 

His dedication and leadership skills led to his appointment as the first International Missions Director of the church from 1991 to 1996.

Founding the Pentecost International Worship Centre

In 1993, Onyinah founded the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), a ministry of The Church of Pentecost that has since grown to become a beacon of worship and spiritual growth within the church.

Chairmanship

In 2008, Onyinah was elected Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, succeeding Apostle Michael Ntumy. His tenure as chairman, which lasted until 2018, was marked by significant organizational growth, theological clarity, and spiritual renewal within the church.

He was re-elected in 2013, securing 77.3% of the votes cast, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by his peers.

Contributions to National and International Bodies

Apostle Onyinah’s influence extends beyond The Church of Pentecost. He served as President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council from 2011 to 2019 and Chairman of the Ghana Evangelism Committee from 2010. His leadership was instrumental in fostering unity and cooperation among Pentecostal and Charismatic churches in Ghana.

Internationally, Onyinah has been involved in numerous organizations, including the World Council of Churches and the International Review of Mission. He co-chairs the Empowered21 Africa and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Pentecostal Theology. His participation in dialogues between Pentecostal and Catholic theologians underscores his commitment to ecumenical relations.

A prolific writer, Apostle Onyinah has authored several books and academic articles that address key theological issues and provide insights into Pentecostal spirituality and practice.
