“The Ultimate Sacrifice”: A Sermon by Archbishop Duncan-Williams

2–3 minutes

Introduction

In his sermon at Action Chapel International, Spintex-Accra, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams addressed several significant themes that were both spiritually and socially relevant.

The sermon, titled “The Ultimate Sacrifice,” focused on the importance of sacrifice, the role of prayer and intercession, and the need for political integrity and national peace.

The Ultimate Sacrifice of Jesus Christ

Archbishop Duncan-Williams emphasised the significance of the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ, describing it as the ultimate sacrifice that surpasses all others. He stated that since AD 33, there has been no need for daily sacrifices in the temple because Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient.

“There is no other sacrifice that is above and can be compared to the sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ,” he declared. He urged believers to rely on the blood of Jesus, which speaks better things than the blood of Abel, and not to seek other blood sacrifices for power or success.

Spiritual Sacrifices Required from Believers

While blood sacrifices are unnecessary, Archbishop Duncan-Williams highlighted that believers are still called to make other forms of sacrifices. These include giving up valuable things such as time, money, and personal comfort for the cause of God.

He shared a personal testimony about selling a strategic piece of land to lay the foundation of the church building, which he considered a significant sacrifice. He assured the congregation that such sacrifices for the kingdom of God would not go unrewarded.

Political Integrity and National Peace

Addressing the political climate in Ghana, the Archbishop called for national unity and integrity. He emphasised the importance of prioritising the nation’s well-being over party loyalty, especially in the upcoming elections.

“No politician or political party must do anything to win this election that will bring an outcome that will endanger, compromise the security, the peace, the democracy, and the stability of this country,” he cautioned. He urged the congregation to pray for all political parties and the nation’s security forces to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The Power of Prayer and Intercession

Archbishop Duncan-Williams highlighted the power of prayer and intercession as vital tools for believers. He encouraged the congregation to be vigilant in prayer, not only for their personal lives but also for the nation.

He provided biblical examples of how prayer and intercession have overturned prophecies and changed outcomes, emphasising that believers have a responsibility to enforce the victory of Jesus’ sacrifice through prayer.

The Role of Community and Belonging

The Archbishop also stressed the importance of community and belonging within the church. He warned against isolation and encouraged members to participate actively in church activities, including fasting and prayer meetings.

He highlighted that being part of a community provides support and strength, especially during times of trouble.

Conclusion

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams’ sermon was a compelling call to action for both spiritual and national responsibility.

By emphasising the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, he reminded believers of the power and sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice.

Additionally, his call for political integrity and national peace underscored the importance of prioritising the country’s well-being over personal or party interests.

Through prayer, intercession, and community involvement, believers are encouraged to live lives of genuine sacrifice and contribute positively to their nation’s political and spiritual landscape.
