“The story of Lamech in the Bible teaches us the importance of humility, repentance, and the need to avoid boasting about wrongdoing, especially when it involves harm to others.”
As Lamech stepped onto the stage to present his story and impart some lessons, he had a simple outline to follow.
He would recount his life and highlight what could be learned from him so that those who came after would not repeat his mistakes.
“There are some things I did well and others I failed to achieve,” Lamech began as he grabbed the microphone. “You are all aware that I am the grandson of a well-known man named Cain, who murdered his brother Abel (Genesis 4:8). My father was his beloved son, Enoch, for whom he built a city (Genesis 4:17). My father left a rich inheritance for his descendants. I married two wives, Adah and Zillah (Genesis 4:19), and from them came great men who mastered their fields of endeavor. To this day, they are living examples of how men and women can excel in their skills and impact others.”

As Lamech recounted the positive aspects of his life, he felt the urge to delve into the darker parts. “I killed a man,” Lamech confessed. The crowd was shocked to hear that such an innocent-looking man could commit such an act.
“The worst part of it,” Lamech continued, “was that I boasted about these acts to my two wives in a poetic manner (Genesis 4:23-24). If I were given the chance to live my life over again, I would never do such a thing. There is nothing admirable about murdering a young man and then bragging about it.
How would I have felt if any of my children had been brutally murdered over a misunderstanding with an older man? I would have mourned them for life, just as Jacob did when he believed his son Joseph was dead (Genesis 37:34-35),” Lamech shared, his voice filled with regret.
“None of you should repeat the mistakes I made in my life. It did not please God,” Lamech said with deep remorse. His story teaches us not to love evil or boast about wrongdoing.
We have no right to take the lives of others whom we did not create. No matter what others do to us, we must learn to forgive and leave vengeance to the Lord (Romans 12:19). Lamech sat down, feeling a sense of fulfillment for sharing his story.
Action Plan: Reflect on areas in your life where you may be holding onto pride or boasting about past wrongs. Seek God’s forgiveness and commit to a path of humility and repentance, allowing God’s grace to transform your actions and attitudes.
