Faith in the Spotlight: A Christian’s Journey in the Modelling Industry

3–4 minutes

Introduction

The modelling industry is often perceived as a world of glamour, fame, and attention.

For Christians, however, it can be challenging to navigate the standards and expectations of this industry while maintaining their faith and values.

Judith Akoto, a model and entrepreneur, shares her personal journey of pursuing her passion for modelling while staying true to her Christian beliefs.

The Conflict Between Faith and Modelling

Judith grew up in a Christian home, where modelling was considered a “worldly” pursuit. For years, she pushed aside her dream of becoming a model.

Even when people repeatedly asked her if she had considered modelling, she explained that her faith prevented her from pursuing it. “I grew up in a Christian home, and for the longest time, modelling was seen as a worldly thing, so I just gave up on that dream,” Judith recalls.

It wasn’t until after university that Judith began to reconsider her passion. A conversation with her boss, who was a photographer, led her to finally explore the idea of modeling. Despite her initial hesitations, Judith realised that she could pursue her passion while staying true to her faith.

Defining Her Own Standards

One of the most significant moments in Judith’s journey was when she realised that she could define her own standards within the industry.

During a meeting with a photographer, Judith was encouraged to focus on her diligence and excellence rather than conforming to the industry’s typical expectations. “I can define the rules, and what is necessary is more about how diligent I am and how excellent I am with what I do,” she was told.

Judith found inspiration in scripture, specifically Matthew 5:16, which says, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

This verse shifted her perspective, helping her realise that her modelling career could be an opportunity to reflect God’s glory rather than seeking personal fame or validation.

Overcoming Challenges in the Fashion Industry

As Judith began her modelling career, she faced numerous challenges. The fashion industry is often driven by clout, appearance, and social influence, which conflicted with Judith’s values.

She recalls an incident where she was offered a lucrative contract that required her to compromise her beliefs. Despite the financial benefits, she declined the offer, stating, “I’m not any other model; I am Judith, and my faith and my values matter greatly to me.”

Judith’s decision to remain firm in her faith came at a cost, as she lost several opportunities. However, she also gained recognition for her consistency and integrity.

One fashion company even approached her because they admired her commitment to maintaining a modest and respectable image. “The CEO told me she checked my profile and saw the consistency in how decently I looked… She said she believes that I stand for something higher,” Judith shares.

Conclusion: A Light in the Industry

Judith’s journey as a Christian model highlights the importance of staying true to one’s faith, even in an industry that often pressures individuals to conform to worldly standards.

Through her story, Judith encourages other Christians to let their light shine, as Jesus commanded. “We are called to a higher call,” she says, emphasising that Christians can pursue their passions while upholding their values and reflecting God’s glory in every aspect of their lives.

Judith’s story serves as an inspiring example of how faith and professionalism can coexist, even in challenging industries like modeling. By defining her own standards and remaining steadfast in her beliefs, she has not only pursued her dream but also become a role model for others.
