God’s Design, Our Obedience: Four Key Lessons from Exodus 38

2–3 minutes

Exodus 38

Introduction

In Exodus 38, the team of workers called by the Lord continued their noble work on the house of the Lord according to the instructions given to Moses.

This chapter emphasizes the importance of following God’s instructions meticulously. To follow God, we must know and adhere to His specific tasks for us.

We will delve into four key aspects from this chapter: the making of the altar of burnt offering, the making of the bronze laver, the making of the court of the tabernacle, and the materials of the tabernacle.

Lessons:

1. The Making of the Altar of Burnt Offering (Exodus 38:1-7): The workers had the specific task of making the altar of burnt offering. They followed the detailed instructions God gave to Moses, using the prescribed materials and measurements.

Just as the workers followed specific instructions, we are called to obey God’s commands in our lives (John 14:15).

The attention to detail in making the altar reminds us that every aspect of our service to God should be done with care and precision (Colossians 3:23).

2. The Making of the Bronze Laver (Exodus 38:8): The bronze laver was made using the bronze materials as instructed. It was used by the women serving at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

The bronze laver signifies the need for purification before approaching God. In our spiritual lives, this points to the importance of confessing our sins and seeking cleansing through Christ (1 John 1:9).

Like the women who served, we are all called to serve in the house of the Lord with a pure heart (Romans 12:1).

3. Making the Court of the Tabernacle (Exodus 38:9-20): The construction of the court of the tabernacle was detailed and specific. The workers followed God’s instructions regarding the materials, measurements, and other elements to ensure it reflected God’s design.

The detailed construction of the court teaches us to follow God’s blueprint for our lives and ministries (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The collaboration of the workers in building the court highlights the importance of unity and cooperation in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-14).

4. Materials of the Tabernacle (Exodus 38:21-31): This passage lists the materials used for the tabernacle, highlighting the involvement of skilled individuals like Bezalel and Aholiab, who were empowered by God to perform the work.

God provides both the materials and the skilled people needed to accomplish His work (Philippians 4:19).

Just as Bezalel and Aholiab were empowered by God, we too are given spiritual gifts and abilities to serve Him (1 Peter 4:10-11).

Conclusion

Exodus 38 teaches us that God calls people to follow His instructions to achieve His purposes. He empowered Bezalel, Aholiab, and others to complete His work for His glory.

We must be attentive to God’s instructions and serve Him with diligence and precision. God is detailed about His work and provides the necessary empowerment to accomplish it.

By following His guidance, we can effectively serve and glorify Him in all that we do.
