Following God’s Instructions to Enjoy His Presence

2–4 minutes

Introduction

In the final chapter of Exodus, we witness the completion of the tabernacle and the subsequent descent of God’s presence upon it. This moment marks a significant event in Israel’s journey—God choosing to dwell among His people.

It reveals a powerful truth: God’s presence is attracted by obedience to His instructions. Just as Moses and the Israelites followed God’s detailed plans, so too can we experience God’s presence when we align our lives with His will.

Let’s explore three key lessons from Exodus 40 on how to live in God’s presence.

1. Be Attentive to God’s Instructions (Exodus 40:1-15)

The first lesson is the importance of attentiveness to God’s commands. Moses received specific instructions from God on how to set up the tabernacle and its furnishings after the construction was completed.

This was not just a one-time event but part of an ongoing relationship with God, where each step of obedience opened the door for further guidance.

Until we follow through with the initial set of instructions, we cannot expect the next level of revelation or direction. In the same way, when we faithfully obey God’s Word, He continues to guide us.

Psalm 25:14 reminds us that “The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them.” Therefore, staying attentive to His instructions allows us to continually walk in His plans.

“Until we are done with our first level instructions, we cannot proceed to the next instructions.”

2. Obey God’s Instructions Completely (Exodus 40:16-33)

The second lesson emphasizes the necessity of full obedience. Scripture records that “Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded him” (Exodus 40:16).

He didn’t alter or reinterpret God’s instructions; he followed them exactly. This total obedience to God’s detailed commands led to the completion of the tabernacle and prepared the way for God’s glory to descend.

Obedience is not optional—it is a requirement for experiencing God’s fullness. James 1:22 teaches, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Just like Moses, when we align our actions with God’s will, we create an environment for His presence to dwell.

“God’s instructions are not for just hearing but also doing.”

3. Enjoy the Presence of the Lord (Exodus 40:34-38)

Once the tabernacle was set up according to God’s instructions, His glory filled it. The Israelites learned to enjoy and recognize the presence of God. They understood that when the cloud of God’s glory rested on the tabernacle, they were to remain still, but when it lifted, they were to move.

This awareness of God’s movements shows the importance of not only attracting His presence but also understanding how to follow it.

To enjoy God’s presence, we must develop sensitivity to His workings in our lives. Hebrews 13:5 reminds us of His promise: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” His presence is with us, and it’s up to us to discern His leading.

“We must attract, enjoy and know how His presence works in our lives.”

Conclusion

Exodus 40 teaches us that God desires to dwell with His people. By being attentive to His instructions, fully obeying His commands, and enjoying His presence, we can experience the fullness of God’s fellowship.

As He promised, God will never leave nor forsake us. Our responsibility is to position our hearts in alignment with His will, ensuring that we live in the continual flow of His presence.
