“Don’t ever call me an icon” – Bishop David Oyedepo

1–2 minutes

During his 70th birthday praise night, Bishop David Oyedepo made a powerful remark, humbly rejecting any claims of being called an icon. “Don’t ever call me an icon,” he said. “I’m representing the icon, Jesus. I’m not an achiever. We don’t achieve in the kingdom; we engage with grace to find our place.”

Oyedepo emphasised that true success is not measured by possessions or titles, but by one’s contributions to others. He added, “Possession has no value; it’s what you add that does. Be contribution-driven, not position-driven.”

Reflecting on his own life, Oyedepo shared how he has always prioritised impact over material wealth. “No one ever said I have a car, a house, or a plane. What matters is the value you bring,” he explained.

In closing, Oyedepo urged the young generation to focus on adding value, not seeking recognition. “Your legacy is not in a name placed on a building, it’s in the lives of people. Keep living by the word, and beware of pride.” He passionately encouraged everyone present, saying, “You are going places. Please, stand to your feet.”
