“Know your Bible and pray a lot. And God will use you to exceed all the PhDs and seminary degrees” – R. T. Kendall

In a recent interview, renowned preacher and author R. T. Kendall, who has served in ministry for over 70 years, offered insightful advice for young ministers seeking to have a lasting and impactful ministry.

Reflecting on his decades of service, Kendall shared what he believes are the key elements for success in ministry: a deep knowledge of the Bible and a strong prayer life.

When asked what advice he would give to his younger self or to today’s young ministers, Kendall stated, “I would not recommend seminary. I think of Acts 4:13, when the Sadducees saw the boldness of Peter and John, they were amazed. Notice that they were uneducated, but they had been with Jesus.”

Kendall emphasized that education, while valuable, pales in comparison to the power of personal communion with God through the Bible and prayer.

He continued, “My advice to anybody, two things: know your Bible and pray a lot. Yes, that’s it.” Kendall expressed concern that many in ministry today do not have a strong foundation in the scriptures. “What worries me, J. John, people don’t know their Bibles. Many preachers, the only time they read the Bible is when they want a sermon, and they don’t know the Word. If I had a legacy, my deepest desire is that people would start taking the Bible seriously.”

Kendall also highlighted the importance of prayer, noting that through it, believers can understand God’s ways. “Two things God wants us to know: His Word and His ways. His Word, the Bible. How do you get to know anybody’s ways? By spending time with them,” Kendall explained.

He used examples from his own life, mentioning how those close to him, like his wife Louise and his son T. R., have come to understand his ways by spending time with him.

In conclusion, Kendall’s message was clear: knowing the Bible deeply and maintaining a vibrant prayer life are the true keys to enduring ministry. “Know your Bible and pray a lot. And God will use you to exceed all the PhDs and seminary degrees,” Kendall said.

As Kendall’s legacy continues to inspire, his call for ministers to prioritize scripture and prayer over formal education rings out as a timeless message for spiritual leaders.
