Pastor Adeboye Calls for Unity & Maturity: Ending the Tithing Debate Among Christians

1–2 minutes

At the October 2024 Holy Ghost Service at Redemption Camp, Pastor E. A. Adeboye addressed the ongoing debate surrounding tithing, calling for unity among Christians on the issue. Following recent criticism after his apology regarding past comments about tithing, Adeboye urged believers to move beyond the debate and focus on spiritual growth.

Pastor Adeboye acknowledged his previous statement that non-tithers would not make it to heaven, clarifying that it was not biblical and issuing a public apology. “I said, that’s not in the Bible. I said, I apologize,” Adeboye stated, adding that his intent was never to discourage tithing but to emphasize it as the minimum expectation.

He shared a personal testimony about a businessman who gave 90% of his income to God and encouraged Christians to grow in their giving as they mature in faith. “It is wrong to tie you down to 10% at a time when, by the grace of God, you should be far, far, far above 10%,” Adeboye explained, urging believers to increase their contributions as they deepen their relationship with God.

In response to critics, some of whom have misrepresented his remarks online, Adeboye reiterated his stance that tithing should be seen as a starting point, not a ceiling. He also addressed a shallow sermon by one of his pastors advocating against tithing, noting that Jesus and the apostles’ ministry structures were different, but the principles of giving remain relevant.

Adeboye made an impassioned plea for the global Christian community to end the tithing debate. “Let this argument about tithe come to an end. Please,” he said, stressing that believers should follow their convictions and not quarrel with their pastors or God over the matter. He advised those uncomfortable with their pastor’s stance on tithing to find a nearby church that aligns with their beliefs rather than causing division.

He closed by emphasizing humility and unity, urging Christians to pray for peace and healing in the church and the nation.
