One of the key challenges Mante addresses is the perception that politics is inherently corrupt. He counters this notion by saying, “Politics is not a dirty game. However, dirty people make politics a dirty game.”

He notes, “David was a politician. And I think he’s about the only person that is described in the Bible as a man after God’s own heart.”

He references Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:16, “I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.”

Mante elaborates on this concept, explaining, “Jesus is telling us that we, his disciples, the Christians, we are sheep, but the people we are going to work with are wolves. They will attempt to eat us.”

To navigate these challenges, Mante offers several practical suggestions:

1. Strategic thinking and planning: “Being shrewd means that we approach situations with foresight and intentionality.”
2. Discernment and insight: “True discernment is to exercise discernment and keen insight into human nature, political motives, and complex situations.”
3. Tactical communication and diplomacy: “This involves saying the right things at the right time, framing words persuasively, and avoiding unnecessary confrontations.”
4. Adaptability and resilience: Christians should “be flexible, adapt our strategies as and when needed, and also respond wisely to challenging circumstances without compromising our core values.”
5. Maintaining integrity and moral purity: “We have to uphold our standard of righteousness that reflects the character of Christ.”

The Importance of Balance

Mante concludes by emphasising the importance of balancing shrewdness with innocence, as exemplified in the biblical story of Nathan confronting King David. 

He states, “That is how Christians must engage in politics. It’s not just go and stand in Jubilee House and say, Mr. President, with all due respect, this thing that you did is wrong.”
