Internationally renowned Bible teacher Joyce Meyer has revealed how her ministry, Joyce Meyer Ministries, was built without incurring any debt—a feat she attributes largely to her husband Dave’s financial discipline.
In a candid conversation on her ministry’s broadcast program, Enjoying Everyday Life, Meyer shared the wisdom she received from Dave, particularly his strong aversion to borrowing money. “Dave was always good with money,” Meyer explained, recalling how even as a child, Dave would save money and pay cash for everything, including his first car. This practice of saving and avoiding debt became a cornerstone of how they built their ministry together.
Meyer recounted how Dave’s financial principles guided the ministry’s development, particularly during the construction of their headquarters. “We didn’t have the money to build the building… normally you get a loan,” she shared. “But Dave said, we’re going to build it with cash. We’re not going into debt.” Although this approach seemed daunting, Meyer respected her husband’s patience and persistence.
Reflecting on their journey, she humorously recounted how the only debt they ever took on was for a used copy machine. “It was $500, and we asked if we could make 10, $50 payments. It’s so funny when I think about it now.”
Building their ministry without debt was not easy, Meyer admitted, but it brought many rewards. She emphasized that avoiding debt required discipline and patience, often involving waiting longer to achieve their goals. “It wasn’t nice for us. If you want to know the truth, it was hard because we had to wait a lot longer.”
Despite the challenges, Meyer is grateful they stuck to this path. “I could have talked [Dave] into borrowing some money, but I’m so glad that I listened to him and didn’t do that,” she said. This decision has become a key part of how their ministry operates to this day.
Meyer’s story highlights the benefits of financial discipline and trusting in God’s provision. She believes that while many people assume debt is necessary, her experience shows that it is possible to succeed without it. “I think it’s really God’s best to not be in debt,” she said, acknowledging that though this may seem difficult, it brings peace and freedom from financial pressure.
Her message to listeners is clear: “Not being in debt is very wise if you can do it.”
