How Bishop Dag Heward-Mills Received the Anointing to Teach: The Start of a Global Ministry

2–3 minutes

In a stirring sermon at the Supernatural Convocation held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, in Accra, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, founder of the United Denominations, shared the remarkable experience that ignited his journey as a teacher and preacher.

Speaking at the Elaia City Church, Bishop Heward-Mills recounted how a profound encounter with the Holy Spirit transformed his ministry, enabling him to spread the gospel and establish churches worldwide.

Recalling a pivotal moment in 1988, while he was a medical student on rotation at Suhum Hospital, Bishop Heward-Mills described how he felt something “enter into” him while listening to a sermon by Kenneth Hagin.

“I was praying, and I was a full-time medical student, and suddenly, in the middle of the night, whilst I was on my knees…something entered into me,” he shared. The moment was further marked by a voice he heard in the room, saying, “From today, you can teach.”

This supernatural experience, as he described, gave him an unshakable confidence in his calling to teach the Word. Reflecting on the magnitude of the moment, he noted, “It was good. It entered into me, and then I heard a voice in the room, and the voice said, ‘from today, you can teach.'”

He also shared that a second voice affirmed this calling, saying, “I’m going to prove it to you,” setting in motion the foundations of his future ministry.

In the years that followed, his small fellowship, which initially consisted of about 20 people, began to grow steadily. Despite his training and career in medicine, Bishop Heward-Mills said his heart remained focused on building the church.

“The church started to grow, and the transport business, I would forget,” he admitted humorously, explaining how his interest in business could not compete with his passion for ministry.

The event offered insight into his extensive church-building mission, which spans over 35 years and includes churches in regions as far-reaching as the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands.

“We have been successful by the grace of God in this vision of building churches,” Bishop Heward-Mills affirmed, noting that this success has been grounded in the anointing he received that day in Suhum.

Addressing the spiritual nature of his work, he stated, “The church, it is a spiritual thing, and it is by the gift of God.” His reflections served as a testament to the powerful role of faith in his journey, an experience he hopes will inspire others in their ministries.

As the convocation concluded, Bishop Heward-Mills reminded attendees that managing success is as vital as achieving it.

He encouraged the church community to look after their growth, faith, and ministries with diligence, as he has done since that life-changing day in 1988.
