ICGC General Overseer Pastor Mensa Otabil has emphasized the importance of making purposeful decisions in life, particularly as believers navigate critical areas like career and marriage.
Speaking at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie-Accra on Sunday, December 1, 2024, during his sermon titled “Fit for Purpose (1),” Pastor Otabil cautioned against the misconception that purpose limits one’s life to a singular, rigid path.
“Usually, when we say we must live purposefully or that God has a purpose for our lives, people begin to narrow everything down,” Pastor Otabil stated. “Some think there’s only one thing they must do with their lives, whether it’s a specific job or profession. But in God’s purpose, there are many things we can do as long as they serve a higher purpose.”
He warned against overcomplicating decisions, particularly in areas such as marriage. Addressing the idea of “soulmates,” Pastor Otabil dismissed the notion that happiness hinges on finding one specific person.

“Some people feel there’s only one person they must marry, their soulmate. And if they don’t marry that person, they will never be happy. That’s not true,” he explained. “You can be happy with different people if they fit into the general purpose of God for your life.”
Pastor Otabil underscored the biblical foundation for successful marriages, emphasizing that the general purpose of marriage is rooted in mutual love and respect.
“For a man, it’s about loving your wife as Christ loves the church. For a woman, it’s about honoring your husband as Christ,” he said. “If you marry a born-again believer and live out these principles, your marriage will work. It’s as simple as that.”
He also challenged stereotypes around compatibility, noting that successful marriages are not contingent on marrying someone who fits a preconceived “type.”
“There’s no place in the Bible that says marriage succeeds because you marry your type. Marriage works because it aligns with God’s purpose,” he affirmed.
Pastor Otabil’s sermon served as a clarion call for believers to focus on the broader purposes of God in all decisions. “Purpose isn’t about limiting options; it’s about ensuring every choice serves the higher plan of God,” he concluded.
This message resonates as believers prepare to enter 2025, reinforcing the importance of intentionality in every facet of life.
