“In the Likeness of Men”

2–3 minutes

Introduction

Christmas is a profound reminder of God’s immeasurable love for humanity. It showcases the extraordinary lengths to which our Creator went to redeem us. If we reduce this season to festive activities alone, we risk missing the invaluable message of God’s selfless investment in us.

Paul, in Philippians 2:5-7 (NKJV), stated: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”

From this, three truths stand out:

1. Made Himself of No Reputation

Imagine the heir to the greatest kingdom relinquishing His glory for the sake of His subjects. That is what Jesus did. Though He had all authority, He chose humility. He could have entered Jerusalem with chariots of fire, yet He rode on a lowly donkey. While He could have been praised by multitudes of angels, ordinary men sang His hosannas. Jesus modeled humility, urging us to live with the same mindset (Matthew 11:29).

2. Taking the Form of a Bondservant

Jesus embraced the form of a bondservant, humbling Himself to serve mankind. As foretold in Isaiah 52:13, He became Yahweh’s faithful servant. He washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17) and sacrificed His life for humanity’s redemption. His actions illustrated true kingdom service: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” (Mark 10:45).

3. Coming in the Likeness of Men

Instead of appearing as an angel, Jesus chose to become human to identify with us. As Hebrews 2:17 reveals, He became like His brethren to fully redeem them. Having endured human suffering and weakness, He is now our compassionate High Priest who helps us in our trials (Hebrews 4:15-16).

The Dual Nature of Christ

The Bible affirms that Jesus is both fully God and fully man. These two aspects uniquely qualify Him to be our Savior. This truth forms the foundation of the Gospel—the Good News for all people.

This Christmas, reflect on these truths and share the message of God’s selfless love with others. Declare boldly that our Savior came “in the likeness of men” so that we might become children of God (John 1:12).
