Introduction
In a sermon preached at Christ Temple East, Pastor Mensa Otabil concluded the “God Year” with a profound message about God’s omnipotence, drawing insights from Genesis 17:1-2.
This scripture marked a pivotal moment in Abraham’s journey of faith. After decades of waiting for God’s promises of land and descendants, Abraham, at 99 years old, encountered God, who introduced Himself as El Shaddai—The Almighty God.
Pastor Otabil reflected on the context of Abraham’s life, emphasizing the 14-year period of silence between Genesis 15 and 17. During this time, Abraham received no tangible evidence of God’s promises being fulfilled.
“Sometimes we all go through that season of silence,” Otabil noted. “You’re serving God, but nothing is happening.” Yet, even in this silence, Abraham continued to trust God, an example believers are called to emulate.
God’s Unique Name: El Shaddai

This is the first instance in Scripture where God uses the name El Shaddai to describe Himself. As Pastor Otabil explained, El signifies God, while Shaddai conveys dual meanings: “the mighty one” and “the big-chested one.”
Using relatable imagery, he described El Shaddai as a powerful, muscled figure who has the strength to overcome all challenges. “God is saying, ‘I have the muscle to make it happen,’” Otabil emphasized.
This illustration paints God as not only capable but also actively involved in fulfilling His promises.
Faith Through Uncertainty

For 25 years, Abraham waited for the promised son, enduring doubt and societal pressures. Yet, when God appeared to him at 99, He reaffirmed His commitment, declaring, “I will make My covenant between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly” (Genesis 17:2).
Pastor Otabil encouraged believers to hold on to God’s promises, even in the face of delay. “Time can never run beyond God because He is the owner and creator of time,” he assured.
The Lessons for Today

The story of Abraham teaches modern believers that no situation is beyond God’s power. Pastor Otabil urged, “Whatever your need is, He has the muscles to make it happen.”
He acknowledged that life is filled with unfinished business and imperfect years but reminded the congregation to trust El Shaddai, who is more than able.
A Personal Application

As we close the year, believers are challenged to trust in the Almighty God for every unresolved matter. Whether it’s health, finances, or family, Pastor Otabil’s message is clear: “God’s might is insurmountable. He is bigger than the biggest, greater than the greatest.”
Like Abraham, who saw God’s promises fulfilled despite human impossibilities, we too can rest in the assurance that El Shaddai will bring His plans to pass.
Conclusion

Pastor Otabil’s sermon is a timely reminder of God’s faithfulness and power as believers prepare for the new year.
Through every season of silence, unfinished work, or unmet desire, God’s declaration to Abraham rings true for us: “I am El Shaddai.”
With unwavering faith, let us entrust our lives to the Almighty God who is mighty to save, deliver, and fulfill His promises in His perfect timing.
Let us end the year boldly declaring, He is El Shaddai—the God who never fails.
