After years of being a Christian, I paused one day and reflected on the countless sermon notes I had taken over the years. From my first impactful sermon at ICGC Christ Temple to the present, I pondered how much of what I had written down was truly evident in my life. The thought struck me: It is easy to jot down sermon notes but much harder to apply them to daily life.
Writing down insights is valuable, but transformation comes through application. James reminds us, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22, ESV). The life of faith is not just in knowing the Word but living it. Joshua 1:8 emphasizes that prosperity and success come from meditating on and obeying God’s Word: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it” (ESV). Similarly, Psalm 1:1-3 declares that the person who delights in and applies God’s law is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in every season.
Christian growth is a daily practice of hearing, meditating on, and living out the Word. There is no instant success or magic shortcut. True transformation demands persistent and intentional effort—reading, studying, teaching, and applying God’s Word in every aspect of life.
Consider how children learn: they observe, imitate, and practice. One day, I noticed my young son attempting to brush his hair with a hairbrush. Nobody had explicitly taught him, but he imitated what he saw us doing. Likewise, spiritual growth follows the same pattern: knowing and consistently practicing spiritual disciplines like prayer, fasting, giving, and serving lead to lasting change.
Jesus highlighted this principle in Luke 11:28 when He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (NIV). It’s not enough to listen; obedience to the Word is what brings blessing.
Whatever spiritual habits you aim to master, practice them faithfully. Do not be content with passive knowledge; step out and live what you know. Transformation is in the doing!
