Pastor Otabil Warns Against Picking and Choosing Parts of Jesus

1–2 minutes

Accra – Renowned theologian and Senior Pastor of ICGC Christ Temple East, Pastor Mensa Otabil, has called out the growing tendency of some Christians to embrace a “modular” view of Jesus Christ, likening their selective faith to a buffet where they “pick and choose what they like.”

Speaking in his recent sermon titled Which Jesus?, Pastor Otabil cautioned against tailoring Jesus to fit personal preferences.

“You cannot say Jesus is all love, but he’s also judgment,” he emphasized. “The same one who says, ‘Blessed are they,’ also says, ‘Woe is he.’ You don’t pick this about him to support your cause. You have to embrace the totality of who Jesus is.”

Pastor Otabil observed that this modular view is often reflected in social movements and personal agendas. “Those who fight for social justice claim Jesus as their model. The gay rights movement appeals to the idea that Jesus accepted everybody and didn’t discriminate. But they forget about the Jesus who said some people will go to hell.”

He also expressed concern about how this attitude has seeped into church life. “Many Christians these days come to church only for what they can get out of it. They skip praise and worship because, ‘I like the preaching.’ But worship is more than that. It includes prayer, hymns, declarations, and creeds. Christianity is not modular. It’s about embracing the fullness of Christ.”

Ending with a clarion call, he quoted scripture: “And of His fullness we have received grace for grace.” Pastor Otabil urged believers to accept Jesus entirely, not just parts that align with personal comfort or agendas.
