Pastor Otabil: God Is the Maker and Unmaker of All Things

1–2 minutes

Accra, Ghana — Pastor Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has highlighted God’s unique role as both the creator and destroyer of all things.

Speaking during a sermon, Pastor Otabil emphasized that God’s sovereignty allows Him to not only make but also unmake, a truth central to Christian theology.

“I’ve heard people say, ‘God cannot kill.’ You have to be theologically orphaned to make that statement,” Pastor Otabil remarked. “Because you’re thinking of God as man, that life originates outside of Him. But if He’s the maker of life, the maker of human beings, He can unmake what He has made.”

Drawing inspiration from the story of Jeremiah at the potter’s house, Pastor Otabil explained how God illustrated this divine prerogative. “The potter is making a pot, and when it gets marred, he just makes something new. And God says, ‘Can I not do the same?’” he explained.

He further distinguished between human limitations and God’s absolute power, saying, “We human beings cannot make and unmake because we didn’t make anybody. I didn’t make the earth; I cannot unmake the earth. But God made the earth. He can destroy the earth. He made the heavens; He can destroy the heavens. He made human beings; He can destroy human beings.”

Pastor Otabil reinforced that God’s role as both maker and unmaker underpins Christian teachings on judgment and hell. “Will a good and kind God take people to hell? Of course! Isn’t that too wicked? He made you. He made the earth, He made the air you breathe. He has the power because He’s a maker,” he said.

Quoting scripture, he concluded, “All things were made by Him, and without Him, nothing was made. He is the Word, and He’s God, and we call Him Jesus.”
