Pastor Mensa Otabil Urges Charismatic Church to Self-Examine at Doulos Conference 2025

2–3 minutes

Accra, Ghana – March 4, 2025 – At the Doulos Conference 2025 held at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie-Accra, renowned theologian and founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, delivered a thought-provoking message on the urgent need for the Charismatic Church in Africa to judge itself and correct its errors.

Speaking on the morning of Day 1 of the conference on the topic, “SWOT Analysis of Charismatic Christianity in Africa”, Pastor Otabil acknowledged the massive growth and influence of the African Church but warned of troubling patterns and practices that must be addressed. He based his message on 1 Corinthians 11:31-32, emphasizing the biblical principle of self-examination.

“If we would judge ourselves, we will not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord that we may not be condemned with the world,” he quoted, stressing that self-judgment is a shield against external condemnation.

Pastor Otabil urged the African Church to adopt a culture of introspection and self-correction to avoid external scrutiny that could be damaging. “Any organisation, any movement, any individual who is able to judge himself protects himself from being judged by others,” he said. “I don’t know about you, but between you judging yourself and others judging you, which would you prefer? I think I would prefer me judging myself.”

He further warned that allowing external forces to judge the Church could lead to harsh criticism and destruction. “When you fall into the judgment of external people, they have no mercy and they would just destroy you. So before they destroy you, judge yourself.”

Pastor Otabil’s call for self-reflection comes at a crucial time when the Charismatic movement in Africa faces increasing scrutiny over issues such as doctrinal integrity, financial accountability, and leadership ethics. He urged leaders and members alike to critically assess their beliefs, teachings, and practices to ensure alignment with biblical principles.

“The Charismatic Church in Africa must judge itself so it will not be condemned with the world. We must be introspective. We must be able to look within,” he emphasized.

His message resonated with many attendees, sparking conversations about the need for reforms and greater accountability within the Church. As the conference progresses, it is expected that his challenge will inspire deeper discussions on how the Charismatic movement can refine its mission and uphold its credibility.

Doulos Conference 2025 continues with more sessions featuring key speakers addressing various aspects of Christian leadership, doctrine, and societal impact.
